The Antarctic is the coldest place on the earth. The temperature can be as low as – 80 degrees Celsius and the wind can blow at 320 km per hour. There is not a large variety of plant and animal life.

The animals in these regions are usually white or light –colored
• Polar bear: - has thick fur and layers of blubber which help to keep it warm. The blubber is a source of energy.
• Walrus: - has tough skin and thick layer of fat which protect it against the cold and from attacks by other walruses. Walrus has tusks to dig up shellfish from the sea bed.
• Musk oxen: - have a woolly coat and thick layers of fat. In winter, they grow a long overcoat of windproof hair.
• Penguins: - live only in the southern Hemisphere. They cannot fly, but are excellent swimmers. They use their wings and flippers for swimming.
Animals of mountainous regions
The mountains offer a range of temperature. The lower regions are warm but at high altitude, it is very cold. Mountain tops are covered with snow. Strong cold winds blow here.

These animals have thick coats of woolly hair, or fur, on their body. They also have very thick skins with thick layers of fat. These two features protect them from extreme cold weather. They have hard claws to walk on snow.
