The unfortunate disruptive and coarse effect of cell phones on society

What Has the Greatest Effect on Modern Society?

If you answered computers or the Internet, you would be wrong. Nothing has so torn the fabric of society as the proliferation of the cell phone.

Like a virus it has invaded all cells of the human family and changed the interaction of people from not so nice to abominable.

Far from being a tool or a useful gadget it has become a leash in which all people can be tied to the great babblethon.

Significant, in fact perhaps central to the much vaunted 'Arab Spring' cell phones are more annoying that nails on a chalk board, more anti-social than a fart in an elevator.

a Panorama

The cell phone rings whenever anyone on the face of the Earth decides to call you. It could be before six a.m. It could be when you're driving. It can be at anytime anyone feels to dial your number.

It rings anywhere; at a funeral or wedding,or when you're having an intimate moment.

The Cell phone is so powerful that it controls you. You don't see the people around you, you don't hear what is happening, you are listening to a voice on a cell phone.

You are controlled by the cell phone.

Look Around

People are walking by, their cell slapped to their air or having one of those cute ear pieces so as to free their hands.
They are driving, and talking on their cell phones.
They are sitting in a club, talking on their cell phones.
Their bodies are here but their mind is in the Matrix.

Look over there, two people walking along a romantic lakeside, phones smacked to their ears, talking to people who aren't there.

Over here is a man, walking through a park. He sees no one, he experiences nothing. He's on his cell phone.

It has happened to you

You're riding in the car with one other person who is on the cell from you enter until you leave.

You're sitting in a waiting room and there's someone babbling away, unaware that you are alive.

You are hearing one side of what might be a very intimate conversation. I've heard life histories from people at restaurants who seem to think that there's no one else around.

And if you think that's bad, what about the texting idiot who can't stop communicating on his Facebook page? Who lives on his Blackberry phone oblivious to what is happening around him?

It's the Radiation

There are hundreds of articles warning about the dangers of radiation from a cell phone. Those who use cell phones don't read them because they are too busy on their cell phones.

The radiation causes permanent brain damage (surprise) and I am sure it is addictive. Worse than cigarettes ever were is CPD-- Cell Phone Addiction.

And when you look at the basic jerks who need to be connected; these are people who can barely carry a conversation in a basket. They aren't in charge of a fleet, they might not even control a pencil sharpener, but are deep in permanent connection to the Matrix.

What is the Purpose?

Instead of becoming simply convenient, a mother being able to know where her child is, or a husband being able to alert his wife when he'll pick her up, Cell phones have very much replaced face to face interaction.

Cell phones have replaced the Being Here Now mantra which would at least prevent one from falling in a hole, crashing into a tree, or being so engrossed in their stupid chat that they miss phenomenon.

Shut It Off

Learn to shut off the cell phone as often as you can. Unless you are a surgeon on call or there's a national disaster, why do you need to be in constant contact?

You are at your sister's wedding. Nothing should be more important. Not the office, not some friend. But there you are, babbling away about where the paper is, or who said what to whom.

You are driving to work. You don't need to talk on the phone, you need to survive to get to work.

Shut off your phone? NO!!! It could be Important!

Important like what? If someone died they'd still be dead in the morning. Unless you are waiting for the news, why do you need to know now that Uncle Futz, who you haven't seen in ten years, died; at 2:45 am? You could hear this at 9:00, after breakfast.

Further; guess what? They can leave a Message!!!
Yes! A Message!

So if you're in the shower, and the cell rings and you don't hear it, (Blasphemy!) the caller can leave a message.

You can get the message when it is convenient for YOU. Hence you didn't miss anything.

Imagine

You wake up at your usual time, you bathe, you eat your breakfast, then, you turn on your cell. There's a number of messages, some arriving at the crack of dawn. You don't recognise the number. There are others from various pests that infest your life like termites. They call at 5 am because they can't sleep.

You listen to your messages. Nothing important.

You proceed to work, but first, you shut off your cell. You concentrate on the road, on the day, think about what you're going to do, prepare various protocols.

You arrive at work, you take your desk, you turn on your cell. A few missed calls from various pests, maybe one you might return. A message or two, nothing important. You now work. Your cell rings whenever anyone in the Universe feels like calling you.

You shut your phone and leave it in the drawer as you go to take lunch. You meet interesting people, you talk to them, you see many things happening during that hour. You enjoy your meal. You walk back to your desk, and now, you turn on the cell. Lots of missed calls from no one you want to talk to. A few messages you don't need to answer.

Time to go home, cell phone off, and you have a nice drive, You reach home, speak to human beings, then, turn on your cell and charge it. You've missed more pointless babble, maybe a message is left that you return. You leave your phone on silent while you eat and talk to the people you can see.

You return upstairs, take your cell, return a few calls, delete most messages, and then, at about 10 pm you shut off your phone.

The Stuff of Fantasy isn't it?

You Can Do It

Make up your mind to .Be Here Now Not to miss seeing what is happening, hearing what you are being told. Make up your mind to live your life Out of the Matrix. Disconnected and experiencing the excitement of walking without training wheels. Of seeing people you are talking to. Of no longer being 'on call' whenever anyone feels like calling you.

Vow to yourself to create periods in which you shut off your phone. That you notice the people around you and speak to them, not to someone miles away. That you insure that when you go anywhere; be it a movie, a lecture, a viewing, the beach, you at least put your cell on silent.

I don't know if the brain damage caused by the cell phone is reversible, but at least you could limit your exposure.

Powerful and meaningful message, Kaylar. I feel likewise. I saw a mother yakking away while pushing the pram with her young child that was totally ignored for what looked like eons! I have been most irritated sitting next to few in trains who are lost yakking the entire journey; the more one tries to keep away from the noise, the more we fail! siva

Most Cell Babblers are completely oblivious to what is happening around them. It is time to disconnect.

I am intrigued by shoppers in supermarkets being directed like robots by a voice on the other end of a cell phone. They seem hypnotized as they are directed from aisle to aisle. If the voice at the other end prompted them to sneak out without paying, they might even obey.

I am amazed seeing people walking around blind to the all, controlled by the cell phone.

A good and informative piece.
A word in praise of the cellphone would have been appropriate. After all, it has revolutionized personal communication.

I don't know, GV. Yes, there's a convenience factor, and the possibility of Emergency use. But the effect on society...?

I have a cell phone only for emergency - we live rurally and winters in Canada....

I do not even know how to send a text!

I never was a phone person. I didn't really see the need for a cell but society changed to the extent that they were made almost obligatory.

What I can't get is people walking and talking and people at functions talking to people who aren't there.
