A lot of buyers focus on the price of the vehicle and terms of the loan when purchasing a car or truck from a dealership. Many dealerships know this, however, and are willing to give their customers a good deal on a vehicle, in the hopes that they can make most of their profit with add-ons. Unfortunately for the customer, these add-ons are often overpriced, and in some cases nearly worthless.
Dealer Extras
A lot of dealers like to sell extras such as paint protection plans or body coverage. These extras can cost hundreds of dollars, but in actuality do very little. These protection plans are supposed to guarantee the buyer that their vehicle will be protected against scratches or other minor body damage. In actuality, though, it is next to impossible to follow the terms in order to keep these contracts valid. In some states, even selling these kind of extras is illegal because they have so little value to the customer.
Dealers will also try to sell a variety of host services to new and used car buyers. Add-ons such as roadside maintenance services and satellite radio can add between $20 and $50 a month to a car payment.
The most common dealer extra is an extended warranty. Warranties can add between $800 and $3000 to the cost of a vehicle and are the most common add-on by dealerships in the United States. These warranties promise to protect the buyer from unexpected maintenance costs, but most buyers will never see the money they’ve put into purchasing one of these.
A lot of people have heard of the maintenance plans sold to car owners after they left the dealerships. While extended warranties differ from these plans in that owners can actually get the maintenance they’ve bought, extended warranties are still a bad deal for the buyer. There are often high “co-pays” or usage fees for the buyer every time he or she brings the car in. When the overall cost of these plans is considered, the majority of owners would have saved money if they had just paid cash for their repairs.
