Essential river surfing gear

River Surfing is fun for water sports fans, there are so many exciting moments that you will experience while River surfing which is why you need to have the right surfing gear to experience the fun.

As a surfer you need to have some basic equipment when River surfing, you can get your surfing gear from any sports store which specializes in surfing supplies. The right surfing gear and equipment will allow you to enjoy surfing on the River.

The Surfboard

You should have a good strong surfboard, a wider board that is well waxed is good for surfing on the River. The length of your board also matters, because it the length determines the size of the wave and the distance between the wave face and any upstream slope.

It is better to choose a board that is not too long so that you can get bigger waves while surfing on the River. A wider surfboard will give you an additional flotation and it also makes your board more stable.

The material so your surfboard should depend on how deep the water is. Most River waves are found in the shallow parts of the River which means that your board will hit the bottom.

Fiberglass surfboards are easily damaged in shallow water falls that is why an Epoxy board is much stronger and is an ideal choice for River surfing.

The Body Gear

You will need a wetsuit, River water is cold and it is impossible to surf without wearing one. A good wetsuit will keep you warm and comfortable when surfing.

The wetsuit should be thick enough so that it insulates your body from the cold when River surfing. A 5/4/3 wetsuit with good gloves, boots and a hood will let you surf for at least two hours even when the water is 0 degrees Celsius.

The wetsuit should be durable and be able to handle terrain. Sometimes you may have to walk along rocky places or through debris which requires you to have a good wetsuit that is durable and can withstand these conditions.

The Head, Hand and Feet Gear

Neoprone boots that have a nice rubber sole and a hood will help protect you from getting brain freezes, frozen toes and fingers. Good boots and gloves are what you require to insulate your body against the cold.

The boots and gloves should be durable because River surfing can be harsh on boots and gloves. Choose a gear that does not easily tear when you grab rocks, trees, or anything to get into and out of the River.

The Leash

When choosing a leash you have to be extremely careful because a leash can easily warp itself around something or get caught in between rocks which can cause you to be pulled to the bottom of the River where you can easily drown.

The River waters are relentless and far more powerful, so it is very important that you know how to use your leash well. Leashes are safer in deep fast moving water and they help your surfboard to stay afloat. When using a leash it should be the length of your surfboard in order to serve you well.

Extra Fins and Fin keys
