With the continuing onslaught of Global warming, rising average temperatures of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans, we have to look at how important the humble tree really is.
- It all started as most things do, when I was a child
- Our forests are sadly Diminishing at an alarming rate
- Trees are home to many species
- The worlds rainforests
- And now we come to the largest of all the forests

It all started as most things do, when I was a child
I guess my love for trees started very young, after reading Enid Blyton’s “The faraway Tree” The story of an enchanted forest in which three children discover an enormous magical tree .The tree is so tall that it reaches into the clouds and so wide that small houses are carved into its trunk.
I loved that tree (And still do now, I still have the books) from that moment trees have always been magical to me. When I was small I loved to climb them and pretend that I would find all sorts of magical adventures there.
Now at a slightly older age I still love trees, but for a different reason, tree are not only home to many creatures but they also help to give us this wonderful world we live in.
Trees keep us warm; supply us with water to drink, and help to keep us well by supplying many medicines,
Our forests are sadly Diminishing at an alarming rate
At one time 50 percent of the earth's total land area was forest, now sadly only its only 30 percent . But does it matter? Well the answer is a most definite yes.
Forests apart from being habitats for many types of animals and organisms, also play an important part in the continuous movement of water around the earth, whether it be liquid, vapour, or ice, water is needed to sustain life on earth, it helps in the conversation of heat energy, which leads to temperature changes around the globe, maintaining life and ecosystems on Earth.
So yes, forests play a very important part in all our lives, many forest are being destroyed in the name of “Progress” some of this progress takes the form of pasture for livestock to feed to people, or for growing food for the livestock for us to eat.
I can never understand why we don't by-past the livestock and just grow food to feed people, deforestation damages habitat, biodiversity and contributes to the creation of aridity, that in turn contributes to global warming
Trees are home to many species
Trees and other plants remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release's oxygen back into the atmosphere if the trees are not replaced we have big troubles. Some of the largest forest on earth include the rain forests these are home to millions of species of plants, insects and microorganisms, they have been called "The world largest pharmacy” as over one quarter of natural medicines used today have been discovered there.
Such as Witch hazel, Aspirin, caffeine , Codeine, Morphine, Quinine, and a whole lot more.
Don't forget forest are also the source of Cola,Coffee and Chocolate as well as rubber, Paper and Perfume.
The worlds rainforests
Rain forest are made up of two kinds, tropical rainforest and temperate rainforest.
Tropical include
The Amazon rainforest
- Encompassing Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guyana
The Ituri Rainforest
- Democratic Republic of the Congo
Temperate include
- Jungles of Iran
- Valdivian temperate rainforest of Southern Chile. Wielangta forest, Tasmania.
And now we come to the largest of all the forests
But the largest of all the forests is, a biome called, depending on what part world you come from
Temperate Grassland, Steppe,Prairie, Pampas, Savanna or Veld
Taiga, is the worlds largest biome, this mostly coniferous forest spreads from Canada and Alaska the USA across to Sweden, Finland, inland and northern Norway, much of Siberian Russia, onto Kazakhstan, Northern Mongolia, and Northern Japan.
Its made up from 29 per cent of the worlds forest this incredible subarctic boreal forest has a summer temperature average of around 10 °C to a cold -54 °C in the winter, a typical Taiga winters day would be -20 °C and a pleasant 18 °C in the summer.
So there you have it, now you know why I love trees so much, why don't you climb that magical faraway tree with me and discover all the wonderful things tree can do for us?

Great article, we need to preserve our forests. I live rurally on 10 acres, since moving here my wife and I have planted many trees but one of the thing that drew us to the property was that it had some trees and natural areas on it already.
I detest homes with massive front lawns that look like football fields.

I live on five treed acres among Ponderosa Pine, Douglas Fir, Manzanita, and California Oaks on the west slope of the Sierra Mountains, and it's heaven. This is a magnificent article - a great star page. Let's all work to keep our forests standing and still healthy. Thanks so much johnnydod.

I planted fruit trees in our backyard way back in 1988. Now they're bearing fruits, literally and figuratively. How I wish I could live a simple life in a forest like Tarzan.

During my School days I wrote loads of such articles on preservation of flora and fauna but such issues diminish swiftly in our conscious.Visiting such kind of writing replenish those worries again.I think we need to write relentlessly on such issues to improve the tenacity of ours.Thank you.

if its for minimizing global warming the reason for planting trees, isnt it too late?
i read some articles that it takes years before trees can help.

True Cowboy but It would help if we stop cutting the trees down.
More than half the world's crops are used to feed animals and because of that more than 260 million acres of U.S. forest have been cleared to create cropland to grow grain to feed farmed animals, and according to scientists at the Smithsonian Institution, the equivalent of seven football fields of land is bulldozed worldwide every minute to create more room for farmed animals.

Johnny I am all for us using our resources in the smartest ways possible. I had a chat with my (soon to be) son in law last night, he is in the dairy business. He said that if we would use the farms that already exist for growing food and using it for livestock, instead of giving government subsides out not to grow or raise livestock, we would have plenty of land for what we need, without destroying more. Nice read. I need to check these books out. Thank you for sharing.:)

They say that if you cut down a tree, you should always replace it. We cut down a very old diseased Pear tree in our garden and have planted seven smaller trees to replace it...Trees are so vital.. What a magnificent Star article and what great images too Johnny..

This is a very good article with some beautiful pictures. Hopefully one day that will not be all we have to remember trees by. I am with Denise; scores of acres of trees could be saved if we managed our resources much better but that is not so much within the control of the minions but rather our incredulous leaders. While I plant several dozen trees a year, I will be glad when global warming progresses to the point I don’t have to cut so many down to stay warm in the winter.

I'm sorry to be harsh on you, Anisha. True, you have the right to speak in a democracy but not at the expense of propriety. And you must accept the fact that wikinut let you go because of that, and I don't want you to undergo further humiliation, not to mention disgrace, when others feel the pinch of your jibes (remember Triond expelled you also for that). So, my friend, go in peace. I rest my case. Sorry, Johnny.
