Do not forget that these general rules can be reversed in the case of left-handed people, and may not apply to those who rehearsed their answers, took drugs or are intoxicated through alcohol. Many people blush when telling lies, subtly but all the same noticeable.
Giveaway eyes and Barefaced lies
The eyes are the mirror if the soul, it is said, many people knowing that their eyes will and do betray their lies. Concealing the truth by wearing sunglasses, or looking down at the ground when talking to someone are sure signs of untruthfulness, and there will be times when we all confront someone, needing to know if that person is being honest with us, so what do we do?
Police have established a method of evaluating the truthfulness of a person by watching the movements of their eyes. It is not an exact science by any means, and it can be manipulated by a skilled criminal or a seasoned liar, but is it generally accepted as a good indicator of honesty.
The various directions of eye movements of a person explain what is usually going on in their mind at that moment. A glance to the observer's left usually reveals a creative process, someone "making up" facts or lying. A glance to the right means that the subject is remembering facts. Up and left-ways indicates a visually constructed Image. If you asked someone to Imagine a desert island, their eyes would show them to be visually constructing this in the minds-eye.
Up and right glances show visually remembered Images. If you asked someone to "What colour shirt or blouse did you wear yesterday?" this would be the direction their eyes moved. In their minds they are "Visually Remembering" the color. To the left Indicates an auditory construct thought. If you asked someone to t ry and sing that song they like, but only in their head, this is where their eyes would move. In their minds, imagining and creating the melody they thought of..
Right-ways looks Indicate auditory memories. Remembering the sound of the National Anthem would take thier eyes in that direction. Left-ways glances Indicate Kinesthetic / Sensory impressions being created. Remembering the taste of chocolate, for instance, would cause eyes to look in that direction. Down and right-ways looks Indicate Internal Dialog, someone talking to themselves. If someone you speak to looks to their right, they are making up what they say, and telling a lie.
When police ask suspects to describe someone in detail they look closely how thier eyes move. If right they are generally making up the description. If left, they are recalling details from visual memory. Generally then, glancing to your left, when observing someone, indicates them to be ying, while a glance right signifies them actually remembering, being honest.
Forensic interrogators also look for the use of word contractions, isn't, doesn't, weren't, and so on, as these are used, normally, by people telling the truth. People who say is not, does not, were not, on the other hand, are often lying through thier teeth. Also looking for the reactions and facial expressions, that accompany what people say, is another police technique. A delay in an expression of sadness will probably indicate that it is not genuine. Truthful emotions are always spontaneous and instantaneous.
Changing the subject is another method used by professional investigators. People who tell lies about particular events welcome changes of topic, visibly relaxing. Innocent people, who have been truthful, normally want to continue the dialog, finding the changes of topic puzzling, and trying to get back to the topic.
Skilled observer can get many clues from our bodily movements. Liars do not use their hands, as a rule, often folding arms together in front, or positioning books, cups or other things between themselves and the questioner, perhaps also touching their mouth or nose a lot, during the interview
Long and detailed answers, to relatively simple questions, can also indicate lying, the more detail given, the suspects think, the more convinced the questioner will be of thier honesty. Confronted, or accused liars will usually deny accusations, in a calm and emotionless manner, instead of getting excited, another good indicator.
Some investigators observe rapid twitches in facial muscles, also that indicate lies. Becoming adept at detecting lies involves ask some neutral questions, establishing a baseline for the subject. Then watch their face and eye movements closely, testing your ability by observing patterns of eye movement.
Do not forget that these general rules can be reversed in the case of left-handed people, and may not apply to those who rehearsed their answers, took drugs or are intoxicated through alcohol. Many people blush when telling lies, subtly but all the same noticeable.
The newly developed high-resolution, thermal imaging camera, can identify instant rushes of blood to the eye area, another phenomenon linked with lying, in which the eye region temperature can rise by several degrees, though the thermal camera needs to be much more sensitive, to accurately detect change at a distance.
You can, you see, without an awful lot of conscious effort, teach yourself the basics of learning to spot lies the ways that the professionals do it, and once you understand what it is you need to look for, you need never let yourself be lied to again.

At the start, you state left glances relate to lies and right glances to truth. Halfway through the piece you reverse that...?
