DayZ is a mod for a game called ArmA II, I will teach you how to download and install DayZ in this article.
Introduction & how to install.
I thought I might aswell write a tutorial for people who are having problems, or who aren't aware of how to install DayZ.
Right - First you will have to download Arma II free, and purchase Arma II: Operation Arrowhead ( Or known as ARMA II: OA ).
RUN BOTH GAMES ONCE People forget to do this, and you will need to do this to access both of the files. Lets say you've purchased it through Steam, now, if you are on a 64bit machine you will need to head to Program Files (x86).
Select the folder named Addons and copy it.
Go to your Arma 2: OA ( Operation Arrowhead ) folder. There normally isn't an Addons folder there, paste the one you have copied from Arma 2 free into there.
You will now need to download the beta patch.
Go to the link below and download the patch, they update it regularly so you might have to check back daily.

Installing the Mod
There are multiple ways of download it, you can choose from below.
You can do it yourself. You will have to download each file and uncompress them into a folder. Put all the files into a folder named addons ( Exactly like that ). Now, put that folder inside another folder named @DayZ - Exactly like that.

Now, paste the @DayZ folder into the Operation Arrowhead folder. The mod is installed. Now, we will make a shortcut, optional of course. ( Skip past the options ).
Use a program called Six Update, it's pretty good and it was originally made to support every Arma mod, it also supports DayZ.
Here is the link, there is also an explanation of how to use it.

Making a shortcut
Within the Operation Arrowhead folder is a new icon marked Launch Arma2 OA Beta Patch.
Right click the icon and select Properties.
There are only two lines that we will be focusing on. The "Target" line should be something similar to this
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead\Expansion\beta\arma2oa.exe" -beta=Expansion\beta;Expansion\beta\Expansion -nosplash
I am presuming you are using Steam, and Steam is installing in the default location on your C drive and you're using Win 7 64bit. It will have a different path if you've installed it elsewhere.
Modify the Target line to this ( Modify it if you aren't using Win7 64 bit ).
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead\Expansion\beta\arma2oa.exe" -beta=Expansion\beta;Expansion\beta\Expansion -nosplash -skipIntro -mod=@DayZ
( Include the quotation mark at the start otherwise it wont work ).
If you aren't Steam, or you have steam installed in a different locations, just change the end of the target line to
-beta=Expansion\beta;Expansion\beta\Expansion -nosplash -skipIntro -mod=@DayZ
For the "Start in" line, make sure it says ( You don't need to modify it ) :
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead\
That's it! You've done it. You can also make a steam shortcut for it, just go to "Games" ( On steam ) and Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library. Click Browse and go to your Arma OA folder and click on the Launch Arma2 OA Beta Patch shortcut. Then choose the Add selected programs.
Right click on it, and select properties. Now, just copy the lines from the shortcut tutorial above and you're done.
Have fun playing DayZ!
