Parrots are unique and have special needs. Gaining your parrots trust and getting them to love you are incredibly important if you are to have a good relationship with them.

Introduction

Any creature needs to feel safe with you before it can bond. Parrots, tarantulas spiders, snakes, lizards, and more familiar cats and dogs. Before taking or purchasing any pet find out if it likes you. One puppy was wary of me because I wore dark sunglasses. I took them off and we bonded for life. Your parrot has to assess its future with you. Will you measure up to the bird's expectations like a mate in the wild.

Choosing a Parrot as a pet

The Parrot you adore and want to take home may have a problem with you or some other member of your family. Any reputable pet store will let you and your proposed pet take time to get to know each other before the purchase is complete. We all know of those animals who instinctively take to a human or vice versa. Learning Mother Parrot behavior will help. Offering a friendly gentle finger poke in the chest or gently stroking the feathers but not the head will help.

To create this first friendship let the Parrot know it has control of its choices. If any species feels control is lost it will panic, fight, bite or scream. Do not overwhelm your proposed pet, but talk to it softly. Allow it to look around familiar surroundings and compare you to them. You have to create a two way debt of affection between yourself and the Parrot to keep its interest in bonding with you.

Becoming friends with your Parrot

To create this first friendship let the Parrot know it has control of its choices. If any species feels control is lost it will panic, fight, bite or scream. Do not overwhelm your proposed pet, but talk to it softly. Allow it to look around familiar surroundings and compare you to them. You have to create a two way debt of affection between yourself and the Parrot to keep its interest in bonding with you.

Playing with your pet Parrot is your means of building that debt of affection into a bond. Wear gloves. The bird will want to sit on your hand, your head and your shoulder. It is claiming your and creating boundaries of what is and is not acceptable. It may groom your hair or wipe its beak on your clothes. Prepare for these things. You are now adopted into a Parrot flock of two where human hygiene must accept avian hygiene.

Living with your Parrot

Your bird is intelligent and long lived like you. If you spend a length of time talking to your bird it will learn to speak. Do not over stimulate your pet. Watch for signs of time out' or times when your pet is trying to teach you, you dumb human. While the bird may enjoy a large cage

or perch it does not want to be permanently chained. Those wings were made for flying. Safe areas within your home are best until you are sure your pet will return. Even then there is a huge risk to an exotic bird in unfamiliar climates from predators.

Provide your bird with a Parrot diaper, close windows and doors and let your pet stretch those wings at a regular time each evening. Avian Fashions provide flight suits with leashes and diapers that are comfortable and allow your pet to use those wings.

Keeping your Parrot happy long term

A bored pet may start to peck at its chest more than is needed for grooming. Try to alter routines to keep Polly Parrot happier. At the same time a variety of s vest available to limit this condition and help healing. There are also warm weather suits for your birds to help cope with chilly winters. These are not a substitute for allowing drafts or cold to affect your pet.

Some frustrated owners find that Parrot bites become a serious hazard. If your Parrot has real wood branches and perches of different sizes, a variety of toys and a set routine of lengthy play this should not become a hazard. Poking you with the blunt closed beak is a play response to that finger you use to poke your bird gently in the chest. It is also an attention getter by either party.

Final notes on Parrots

Remember as time passes your interests and affections change and so do your pets. The quick flight and screech of triumph first displayed as your parrot dive bombs a soft toy, can become a cushion or a preference for perching on the top of the open door. Swinging upside down from the curtain rod can be a delightful change from a regular perch. This is the time to negotiate. We all know negotiate don't we. That is what your parents did when you hung upside down from the top of a dangerous slide or climbed a tree too close to power lines. Now you negotiate with your parrot.

Always remember you Parrot has you on a string. The bird is the beloved and you are the lover. If you cannot convince your pet that certain behaviors like biting are unacceptable, then the bird does need professional retraining by experts. Like any wayward child or spouse you may be required to participate. Try hard to solve the problem. The option is divorce. This means that you pay Parrot alimony for your pet to live in a Parrot shelter with others whose debt of affection with their pet owners was not strong enough to overcome inter-special differences.
