Have you experienced the unconditional love of a Companion animal?
No one has ever experienced unconditional love in its deepest meaning until one has experienced it from a companion animal. Many people go through life without ever experiencing that love and the bond that develops between those fortunate people and their companions. I am one of the fortunate ones because I have known the unconditional love of many companion animals throughout my 67 years here on earth. I cannot imagine life without having that love in it. I have also experienced the sense of loss that ensues the passing on of such a loving and loved companion. We may have other companions that we love and are loved by, but none of them ever replace the ones we have lost. The companions that we have lost remain in our hearts. The love we felt from them and for them endures. Remembering the ones that I have lost over the years still brings tears to my eyes.
I stumbled across the story of IMOM and Jacki's Magic while researching material for another article. I read Magic's Biography with tears poured from my eyes like water cascading over Niagara Falls. I was crying for Jacki and her loss of Magic. I was also crying for myself and the loss of my beloved Jezebel. Memories came flooding back into my consciousness. Recalling how I held her in my arms as the veterinarian injected that lethal injection opened the flood gates. That was seven years ago, but recalling the way she looked up at me in the last conscious moments of her life has me crying as I write this. Jezebel was trying to tell me she understood, and that we would be together again someday. Her look thanked me for taking away her pain and suffering. I have other deadlines that need to be met, but they are going to have to wait until I finish this article.
IMOM was Jacki's legacy to Magic.
As I read Jacki's tribute and promise to Magic, I started to wonder what legacy was I leaving for Jezebel and all the my other beloved companions that had passed on after spending their entire lives showering me with unconditional love. When I lived in the city, I was active in rescuing feral and abandoned cats and kittens, but we do not have that problem up here on Walch's Mountain. Everyone up here puts food out for all the cats, and there's warm barns for them in which to take refuge. Still, after reading Magics story, I want to do more.
Jacki's promise to Magic in her own words.
I will work as hard as I have to in making IMOM a success. This is for you and all your friends who are there at Rainbow Bridge with you.
I will do everything humanly possible to help as many pets as I can. Others who understand the bond between people and pets will join in and a lot of pets will benefit.
No pet should ever have to die because their person didn't have the funds necessary to get proper medical treatment, or medicine and supplies. No pet should get improper care because their person didn't know where to go for education and necessary emotional support while caring for a pet with special needs. No pet should ever have to suffer abuse. And no person should ever feel so helpless and alone as I did after you were gone.
Now you go lie in the sun over Rainbow Bridge and take a nice nap. I will get busy and make something happen. That's a promise!
Because you no longer sleep on my pillow at night does not mean my devotion to you has ended. Quite the contrary.
I'll see you at The Bridge, Magic, when my work here is done. We'll nap together in the sunshine.
Your person,
Jacki

IMOM has helped 1,152 pets between 1998 and 2009.
Since its inception, IMOM, a 501(c)(3) charity, has expended $1,340,036 helping to meet the needs of 1,152 companion animals. IMOM is operated by volunteers and supported by donations.
IMOM has fallen upon hard times.
IMOM's creed is that companion animals shouldn't have to suffer or die simply because their caretakers are financially challenged. IMOM has stood ready to help those financially challenged pet parents who asked for help in the past, never turning a qualified applicant away, but lately they have had to turn qualified applicants away because the funds are not there.
Leave a legacy for your beloved departed companion.
You can leave a legacy for your departed companion animals and help IMOM alleviate the suffering of other beloved companion animals in the process. You can leave a legacy in your pet's name for as little as $10 a month. IMOM gives you a number of options for designating how your donation will be used. I hope that all of you reading this will join me in donating to this worthy cause. I am going to start the ball rolling by setting up a Legacy for my beloved Jezebel.

Hey Jerry, sorry it took me so long to comment. My computer is messing up.
I read this yesterday and tried to put it on my facebook.
To no avail. I got booted off and couldn't get back on.
I have since fixed the problem.

Wonderful and heartbreaking article. Vet bills are so expensive and many who have pets really can't afford them. In the UK there is an organisation called the PDSA - People's Dispensery for Sick Animals. They will give treatment for animals of people of very low income. The problem is there are few of them around (maybe 2 in Scotland), so distance is a huge issue. Brilliant article Jerry xx
