Gouache is traditionally the mixing, of watercolor pigment with opaque white pigment, normally in a watercolor vehicle, made with gum arabic. The word comes from the Italian aguazzo, which stands for mud, and Gouache is ideally suited for use both in illustration, and in photo-reproduction.

There is a technique, known as depth-mapping imagery, which is these days employed by some artists, to give real three-dimensionality to their work. One such, a self-declared fantasist, is Japanese sculptor and painter Kazuki Takamatsu, who creates stunning images of, what might best be described as semi-erotic, yet childish Lolita figures, girls that are either very sad or very violent.

Kazuki undoubtedly enjoys the mixing of traditional techniques with more modern ones, using gouache for hand-painted, single-color based figures, and at the same time employing the ultra-modern Depth Map, which is a technique, wherein each individual pixel becomes a shade of grey, each shade prortional to the distance from which the viewer sees it, in a combination that provides the artist with the ability to achieve amazing depth and surrealism in his works.

Typically done on hot pressed papers, or smooth art boards, because the paint is what gives the texture, and surfaces like these help create a perfectly flat paint film, vital to the finished work. More commonly used also, are tinted papers, as tints are easily covered, whenever so wanted, but can lend pleasing background hues, in unpainted areas, improving the images as a whole.

Shadow/Depth mapping, or projective shadowing, is a concept first introduced, in 1978, by Lance Williams, in the paper "Casting curved shadows on curved surfaces", and is a process through the use of which, shadows can be added to three-dimensional computer graphics. It has been used many times since then, both in real-time, and in many high-end PC games. Pixar's so-called ‘render-Man’ uses it a lot, in such films as Toy Story.

Kazuki was born in 1978, graduating from Tohoku University of Art and Design,l and his talent is very obvious. Stunned by the uniqueness of his artworks, people flock to see them each time they appear. Even though, from distance his art looks as though it might be digital painting, in reality it truly is actually painted by hand, in gouache, mainly monochrome, and usually featuring young female characters, who can be sporting weapons, table lamp, buildings, plants or anything else that he has dreamed up.

There is no doubt whatever, that this talented young man has a bright future, and he might quite easily become a leading light in the art world in future years, as his portfolio and artistic horizons expand, Everything he has done so far has been quite superb, and stunning.
