The Astrology of December 21, 2012
Fear, dread, hope, enthusiasm, and many more emotions are aroused at the mention of the date, December 21, 2012. What does astrology have to tell us about it?

Why did the Mayans end their Calendar on this Particular Date?
It is now known, from the observations rather recently gleaned from the studies and observations of astronomers, that the Sun will align exactly with the exact center of our galaxy on December 21, 2012. Yet the ancient Mayans knew this several millenia before the discoveries of modern day scientists. How they knew we will never know, but know they did. Why else would they have chosen to end their 'long count calendar' on that exact date? We can only guess what this means. The end of the world? The beginning of a new age? Divine intervention? The Rapture? Or just another day at the office?
Since the phenomenon of the Sun aligning exactly with the galactic center occurs on but a single day every 26,385 years, as an astrologer I can only conclude that the day of the solstice represents or 'embodies' something very special, something monumental, something momentous that is beyond words.
The 2012 Winter Solstice Horoscope
I have drawn a chart for the exact moment the Sun makes its ingress to 0 degrees, 00 minutes, 00 seconds Capricorn, or the precise time of the solstice. It happens to fall at 11:15:25 AM in Greenwich, England, and of course at other times during the day all over the world. In fact, in a few locations of longitude in the Far East it will actually occur early on December 22nd. But at this very moment, which happens to be 11:15 AM in Greenwich, the Sun will come to zero Capricorn all over the world no matter what time it is in any particular location.
The house positions of the planets need to be disregarded because the planets' positions in the houses will be seen to be in very different sectors of the chart the farther one moves away from Greenwich. What is of vital importance is the sign placements of the planets and the relationships or aspects they make to each other.
Most notable in this horoscope (click on image at right to enlarge it) is the configuration formed between Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto. This planetary trio forms a perfectly symmetrical triangle, where Jupiter is exactly 150 degrees from Saturn and also exactly 150 degrees from Pluto, and Saturn and Pluto are sextile, exactly 60 degrees apart. This configuration, in astrology is known as a "Yod" - the ancient astrologers termed it "The Finger of Fate," or "The Finger of God". The 150 degree angle between two planets, termed an inconjunct or quincunx, always calls for a shift or major change according to the functions of the two planets involved.
The focal point of this Yod is Jupiter because it it is the planet in the configuration that is 150 degrees from each of the other two. Now, Saturn and Pluto are not only sextile each other, they are also housed in each other's sign - Saturn in the Pluto-ruled sign Scorpio and Pluto in the Saturn-ruled sign Capricorn. They are in what astrology calls 'mutual reception', and thus their power is heightened. Pluto in Capricorn says "tear the system down, destroy it." Saturn in Scorpio says the same thing.
What Jupiter brings to both Saturn and Pluto is growth, both in terms of awareness and expansion. It forces the two of them them to 'wise-up'. It is the signal for inevitable change and transformation to occur in the system, in the way civilization (Saturn-Capricorn) is structured and organized. We can say this because all three of the planets innvolved in the Yod configuration are beyond the personal in their scope - they all connect us to society as a whole, to the world at large, This Yod is a signal pointing to monumental systemic breakdown and transformation. And incidentally, Jupiter is pointing to the need for each of us individually to welcome the process with optimism and to maintain that optimism through the entire process.
Sun Square Uranus
The square aspect between the Sun and Uranus in the solstice horoscope is another harbinger of the need to bring about radical change. Uranus awakens. It brings freedom and liberation from patterns which have become too crystallized. It beckons us to walk a completely new path, travel down a very different road. In the end it is "the truth that will set you free."
Sun Sextile Neptune
Shortly before the solstice Neptune will have entered its own sign of Pisces, where it has not been for 165 years, when it was discovered through astronomical observation. Neptune's fourteen-year transit through Pisces which begins in 2012 corresponds, I believe, to a period when humanity reconnects to its source, to its connection with spirit. Neptune exactly sextiles the Sun during only two days in any given year, but for the very first sextile to be formed between these two planets during the fourteen year span of Neptune's transit through Pisces on the very day of the 2012 solstice is, I would submit, monumentally important, for it suggests nothing else but humanity's stepping through the threshold and realizing on a mass scale that we are all one and all connected to the divine.
It Won't Happen Overnight
Yet it is not as if some magical wand will wave over humanity on the day of the winter sollstice of 2012 and we will suddenly find ourselves in the midst of a new enlightened age of peace and bliss. The date December 21, 2012 represents the day the gate to a new reality and transformed society fully opens. Certainly there will be efforts on behalf of the system, the ruling order, to keep things from moving forward. The forces of authoritarianism, who have no interest in seeing any change occuring or a loss of their power, will continue and perhaps even increase their efforts to maintain control as Pluto continues its transit through Capricorn, and much of what hap[pens over the next dozen or so years will not be pretty. In the end, however, the universe aligns against their efforts, and we will emerge, by the time Pluto enters Aquarius in 2023-2024, as Hindu prophesy states, out of the Age of Kali Yuga, the darkest of them all, into the new age of Satya Yuga, the golden age of enlightenment and peace.
