We take a look at the life of Sophia Loren, and make an examination of her horoscope.
Her early life
Sophia Loren was born Sophia Scicolone in Rome, Italy on September 20, 1934. Her father, Ricardo Scicolone, was married to another woman and refused to marry Sophia's mother Romilda. He was also the father of Sophia's sister, Maria Scicolone.
Sophia and her sister grew up in the slums of Pozzuoli, near Naples. Since their father refused to support them, the two girls and their mother lived in abject poverty from the time of Sophia's birth through the duration of World War II. She was extremely skinny as a child, probably because the family had so little to eat, and she was nicknamed "the Stick."
Her mother was a frustrated actress, and as Sophia rounded out into a beautiful woman, her mother encouraged her to enter beauty contests, which also had the potential of bringing in a little money. At age fourteen she began entering beauty contests, and in 1949 she and her mother landed parts as extras in Quo Vadis and a few other films. She entered the Miss Italy contest that year and won the title of Miss Elegance.
Meeting Carlo Ponti. Her career begins
Carlo Ponti, a well known Italian producer, was judging a beauty contest Sophia had entered and signed her to a movie contract on the spot. Sophia was not quite fifteen years old at the time. Ponti, 21 years her senior, and married, began to groom her skills as an actress. Thus began a life-long partnership, as Ponti produced nearly all the sixty films she was to make over the course of her career.
Sophia began playing bit parts in 1950. Ponti brought her along slowly, and in 1955 she made the first of a dozen films with the Italian star Marcello Mastroianni
Marriage
In 1957 Ponti secured a Mexican divorce from his wife and married Sophia, but the marriage was not recognized in Catholic Italy, and the Italian legal system charged Ponti with committing bigamy. According to astrodatabank.com, "They were forced to have their marriage annulled in 1962 and went through four more years of frustration before turning in their Italian passports and becoming citizens of France, where they were legally married in 1966."
She and Carlo Ponti had two sons, Carlo Ponti, Jr., born December 29, 1968, and Edoardo Ponti, born january 6, 1973. Sophia and Carlo remained married until his death in January, 2007. In November of that year she was asked if she would consider marrying again. "No, never again," she replied. "It would be impossible to love anyone else."
Hollywood
Sophia Loren arrived in Hollywood in 1957, hardly speaking a word of English, but she learned the language quickly. She made her debut in American motion pictures by starring opposite Cary Grant in The Pride and the Passion. Grant fell in love with her and asked her to divorce Ponti and marry him, but of course she refused.
Throughout the sixties and seventies she would star opposite such leading men as Paul Newman, Marlon Brando, Gregory Peck and Charlton Heston. She went to Italy in 1960 to star in Two Women, a role for which she earned the Academy Award as Best Actress.
Later career
Sophia made far fewer films after the mid-eighties, but in the mid-nineties her role in the comedy Grumpier Old Men, in which she seduces Walter Matthau, turned the movie into a smashing box office success.
At the age of seventy-two, still a ravishing beauty, she posed in a scantily-clad costume for the 2007 Pirelli Calendar.
She now enjoys living between Switzerland and California, and she maintains a low-key lifestyle. Loren values her privacy, and she has said "Show business is what I do, not what I am."
Her horoscope
A good place to start with our examination of Sophia Loren's birth chart would be to ask how can she be that beautiful? Venus, the planet of beauty, forms a close conjunction to Neptune in Virgo, and they make a trine (120 degrees) aspect to her ascendant (physical body). Any time Venus (beauty) in the sign Virgo (perfection) aspects the ascendant in a harmonious way, there is going to be very heightened physical beauty. The eighth house is the house of power, and Venus' placement in it, along with its aspects to Neptune and the ascendant, speaks volumes about the power of her beauty. Neptune's addition to the equation renders her beauty breathtaking. Neptune takes her beauty to almost mythical proportions. When Sophia was a teenager, she was nicknamed Sophia "Lazzaro", because it was said her beauty could raise Lazarus from the dead.
Uranus exactly on the cusp of her fourth house, the house ruling one's environment of origin, where we come from, shows that she would cut her ties to her roots completely. She was liberated (Uranus) from the slums of Naples by the time she was fifteen and never looked back.
The conjunction of her Moon to a retrograde Saturn in the second house shows her mother's meager resources, the poverty (second house Saturn) of her family (Moon). Saturn's retrograde condition, far away from her Sun, reveals the absent and non-supportive father. Her problems with tax evasion charges launched against her by the Italian government, for which she spent nineteen days in jail, are also seen in the second house Moon-Saturn conjunction.
Three planets in the ninth house - the Sun on the cusp and Mercury and Jupiter in it - align with a life of exploration and travel. Of course her profession has taken her all over the world, and she has ended up living in foreign countries (ninth house) all her adult life.
Mars in Leo is one of the signatures of an actor. It gives one the confidence to put the self on display. Moreover, The Sun, along with Venus and Neptune in Virgo, reveals great versatility and adaptability (Virgo) in her art (Venus), the world of film (Neptune).
Pluto in the seventh house always reveals its native to have a powerful and profound (Pluto) effect on others (seventh house). When these people walk into a room, everyone sits up and takes notice.
Mercury in the ninth house, in trine aspect to the Moon and Saturn, and sextile Mars, accounts for her ability to learn the English language so quickly, and it's certain that she has no trouble remembering (Moon) her lines (Mercury).
Pluto in the seventh house reveals that her meeting and partnering (seventh house) with Carlo Ponti was a matter of fate (Pluto), and that through connecting (seventh house) to another her life would be transformed (Pluto) completely.
Jupiter's position as the most elevated planet in her birth chart, trine the Moon-Saturn conjunction, indicates her ability to rise above the material limitations of her youth and find success in the world (Jupiter conjunct mid-heaven.
Finally, the chart pattern here is called a locomotive pattern. A locomotive pattern is formed when the planets occupy 240 degrees of the circle and 120 degrees of the circle are empty. Here there is an empty trine between Jupiter and the Moon. Locomotive patterns almost invariably point to a lifetime of great success in the world.
