UFO - Through The Ages
People have witnessed strange things in the sky since the very beginning of recorded history. This article outlines a few of these instances.
The modern period of UFO sightings is thought to have began in 1947 when a pilot named Kenneth Arnold reported nine crescent shaped objects in the sky over Washington state. He described their movement like a 'saucer skimming over water'. A press reporter got hold of this phrase and came up with the caption 'flying saucers' and the rest is history.
Heaven has always been haunted by the suggestion of UFO's by human observers. A french ufologist and author named Amie Michel has questioned cave paintings throughout Europe that date as far back as 20,000 B.C. Some of these paintings show objects that look very similar to the Apollo Shuttle that first landed on the moon.
The famous Altamira cave paintings in Spain show very similar objects but with a figure standing nearby them. Are these very basic drawings a representation of the first visits of extraterrestrial beings?
There is an Egyptian fragment which is thought to be 3,400 years old. This fragment may contain the first account of a UFO encounter. The account centers around 'fire circles' and explains 'shone more in the sky than the brightness of the sun'. These circles were said to have rained down 'fishes and winged creatures'.
The two great epic religious poems of India, the Mahabharata and Ramayana from 2000 years ago both mentioned flying disc objects called 'vimanas'. In Genesis 19:24-28 brimstone and fire rained out of the heavens to cause the demise of Sodom and Gomorrah.
In more recent history the Romans have recorded sightings of strange objects in the sky. Two Roman writers Livy and Pliny reported a mysterious fire object crashing towards the Earth. Julius Obsequens from the forth century wrote about witnesses who had described seven burning globes in the night skies above Rome.
In medieval times a woodcut by Hans Glaser shows a strange display above Nuremberg in Germany in 1561. A similar woodcut created in Switzerland in 1577 shows large numbers of black spheres in the sky apparently fighting.
So what where are ancestors seeing. Sightings of this kind in biblical times and medieval times where usually put down to religious portents. These could be natural happenings in the night sky blown out of proportion but they could also be extraordinary UFO sightings witnessed by our ancestors and recorded for the extension of our knowledge.
