ESP is popularly referred to as the sixth sense. These are uncanny powers that have as yet not been explained though much research has been done on it.

ESP and Human Life

ESP stands for extra sensory perception. Sometimes it is referred to as the sixth sense. ESP does not have a single meaning and relates to many related types of extrasensory perceptions. Peter Hurkos, a Dutch window cleaner got these powers when he fell on his head during a Nazi air raid. On awakening he discovered that he had extrasensory powers, as he could visualize that the man next to him on the hospital bed was a British spy.
He could also visualize that a German Gestapo (secret police) squad was rushing towards the Hospital. He accordingly warned the agent who did the disappearing act. This is recorded in his book Psychic. What Peter Hurkos developed was one type of ESP. There are however some other types of ESP which have now come to the fore. These are
Clairaudience
This is the supposed power to hear things outside the range of normal perception. This is an extrasensory power and involves a person being able to hear the physical voice from a great distance. Sometimes it may also refer to the capability to hear not just the physical sound but sound from another dimension, sounds that cannot be heard by other humans or recording equipment. As an example a person having this power may be able to hear voices or thoughts of the spirits of persons who are no longer alive. Such people often act as ‘mediums’
Buddhist thought lays great stress on this power. It mentions that this power can be achieved by meditation, which transports man to a higher level of consciousness. It means activating athird ear and once this is activated the man can listen to the music from the celestial world or the Gandharva
Clairsentience
This extra sensory perception power helps a person acquire psychic knowledge primarily by feeling and touch. Generally the term refers to a person who can feel the vibration of other people. Such people can sense the impossible, just by the sense of touch like catching the hand of a person. This is a fairly common power in India where many Pir (Moslem holy men) can divine things just by touch. It is a power that is visible and potent.
Clairvoyance
This is a psychic power where a person can perceive or have knowledge of a past or future event. Sometimes he can see vivid images of what has happened or is going to happen to a person. In simple language it is the power of seeing beyond everyday existence. It is a sixth sense and is an addition to the 5 known senses. Generally this refers to the development of a third eye and men who have this power have vivid images flashing before their eyes. These images could be literal images or representations in colors or signs or signals. The images can come in any way. To understand this is easy and at the same time difficult.
How to Achieve these Extra Sensory Perception Powers
Researchers feel that these powers are latent in all human beings and need only a trigger to emerge. We must understand that in the human brain there is a gland know as pineal gland. Earlier, that is many eons ago this gland was fairly large almost the size of a golf ball, but now it has shrunk in size and is the size of a pea. This has happened as man has evolved to the present form as per the theory of evolution. Generally ESP powers have something to do with this gland though there is no conclusive evidence about it.
There are many methods by means of which this ESP power can be ignited’ some of them are detailed below.
1. By spiritual practice
The power can be unleashed by spiritual practice, but for this a guide or a yogi is a must who can show you the path. Ancient Hindu religious texts bring out the fact that clairvoyance is one of the Siddhis. These are skills that are acquired by intense regimes of meditation and personal discipline
A case in point is that of Lobsang Rampa who was able to develop a ‘third eye’. He claimed in a controversial book called the Third Eye that he was a Tibetan lama in his previous incarnation and had developed a third eye by an elaborate ritual of a hole being drilled in his head. After that he developed powers to see people in their true colors as well as have ES powers. He claimed the spirit of the Lama had entered his body.
2. Yoga
This is another path to achieve ESP. The yogis mention that in case a man is celibate and do the Yogic asana regularly with stress on the sir asana, then the spermatozoa will collect in the body and go up the spine by sir asana and touch the brain and ignite extra sensory powers. Swami Shradanand, who is now no more claimed to have these powers or Siddhis through yogic asana and prayers.
3. Act of God
ESP can also be achieved by an act of god like in the case of Peter Hurkos. Hurkos told his researchers that he saw vivid pictures in frames of the event or person. But he also mentioned that sometimes his power inexplicably got turned off.
Research in Extra Sensory Perception
The world of ESP is vast and exciting. Much research is on in the USA. From World War II until the 1970s the US government has been funding research into ESP. The USSR earlier and Chinanow is also conducting research in ESP in big way.
The initial CIA-funded project was later renewed and expanded and the Air Force saw military possibilities in ESP. In 1979, the Army’s Intelligence and Security Command also initiated research in ESP. Apart from the military research much research is on in the civil field.
