Blogging is a fun and often simple thing to do. It can make money for people, but it is a long-term process and one must be willing to do a bit of learning to get this money.
Your Blog... and Readers
If you are writing a blog to make money, you are probably in for a big surprise. A blog is a long term business. But there are a few simple things that can help you build your blogging business. Your readers. These readers are also knwon as traffic and they are the lifeblood to making money with your blog.
While some will suggest that content is the most important thing you can have, you will find that some of the best blogs out there have great content, but no readers. This is a big problem.
So how do you get readers to your blog, and more specifically readers who will make your blog money? beyond simply making money, teh goal for your blogs should be making enough money so that bloggin becomes fun for you and not a chore.
Yor Blog and Traffic
Blogging is fun, until you find traffic is not coming. There are several options, which you can try to increase traffic to your blog. These three options will help you olong term and will improve your search engine traffic as well:
1) Write elsewhere and add a link to your blog. Be mindful that some sites do not like overly promotional linking, so be kind and only add a link if it is allowed. Also focus on where you place your link, as to many links in one place is like one link altogether. Look for putting your links in different domains.
2) Commenting on other blogs. Most of the time your name is the link to your porfile where people can click on your blogs. Leave it at that.
3) You can try to add your blog to a site such as Google AdWords, but be very much aware that without money coming in, this is a very costly method of getting traffic. it will increase traffic, but you will need to know a lot more inforamtion, such as proper keyword placement, to adds to SEO.
Search Engines and Your Blog
Search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN are vital to your blogs success, or are a major way to improve both your blog and your money.
SEO means setting a goal and keeping it simple, but the biggest fact is that to make money you need to know how to make your blog "stand" out. For example if a person was to type in a search term ( also known as keywords) into Google, they usually find websites and blogs based on the search terms.
Your blog needs to have great content, but your titles need to be searchable, and easily found on the search engines. A simple way to do this is to use the Google search and type in some terms, paying close attention to the top ten. Write several titles and type them into Google search again and see what you get.
This is a slow method, but if you are not used to SEO this is an easy to understand and effective way to make money and get traffic to your blog.

I couldn't agree more in fact looking at my working day I probably spend no more than a third working on my site and the rest working to promote my site by various methods. How I would love to just spend all day writing purely for my own site but it just doesn't work like that or at least until you build up an impressive readership who do the promoting for you.
A point I would like to add is that although Google is the leader when it comes to search engines don't ignore the others such as Yahoo when doing research. The simple reason being is that if you solely focus on conquering Google all your effort can be wasted when they do an algorithm change and your traffic disappears. By trying to work your way up on these other search engines at least means that if one traffic source goes there will still be traffic come from the others.
