Why is my Wikinut Article being Rejected

Wikinut moderators have a list of reasons why a Wikinut article should be rejected.
Here are the most common reasons why an article has been rejected and what to do. You may note that the only change to your article that a Moderator can do is to move the category – all other changes are up to the writer.

Title, and/or Summary all in Capitals

Titles cannot be all capital letters, it looks unprofessional. Certain words should be capitalized, of course, but every word should not be fully capitalized. For example note my title: Why is my Wikinut Page being Rejected. This is far better than WHY IS MY WIKINUT PAGE BEING REJECTED, or even why is my wikinut page being rejected.

Articles with Good Titles and Good Summaries get More Views

Summary Duplication

If your summary is the same as the start of your page your page will be rejected (I have to admit I have missed catching this a few times and it looks horrid). The summary will appear at the top of a page and if repeated it looks very poor.

Your summary should be an introduction, an invitation to read further. It should not be the same as the start of your article.

Plagiarism

Copying another writer's work is a big no-no,. Sometimes hard for the moderators to know if a writer is plagiarizing themselves or somebody else. Obviously taking somebody else's work is wrong, and often illegal, but unless you fill in the Notes to the Moderator section, a moderator might reject a page that is truly yours, written by you, and published already.

Wikinut does allow you to republish your own articles that you have published on other sites - but you should let us know to speed things along. A writer can also fill in their personal information to say they write for other sites, and under what other names. You can also write in the Notes to the Moderator "I have published this on Triond" for example.

If a person is caught plagiarizing other writers they are removed from Wikinut, if they write for other sites too – those sights might also be contacted and alerted in regards to the writer being a plagiarizer.

Using a translator to translate a page from another language is also not allowed. This is a bit tricky to catch, but “we have our ways”.

Bad Formatting

Pages that are all in bold, or all in italics are typically rejected, although I have accepted a poem or two written in italics. Pages that have no paragraph breaks, and are a wall of text are rejected.

Another problem occurs when writers copy their page from where
ever they have it published already and the copied version has
odd breaks in the lines, rather than flowing evenly across the
page, I have written here to show what I mean.

Spelling and Grammar

If your spelling, particularly in the title, and summary, are wrong, I will reject a page rather than let it slip through and embarrass you. Spelling, and grammar errors in the body of the article are excused – to a point – too many will cause a page to be rejected, but otherwise it is up to you to read your page again and EDIT to make improvements and corrections.

We understand that English is not everyone's first language but if a page is unreadable due to too many errors, it needs to be rejected.

Use of Copyright Photos

Each writer is responsible for claiming they own the rights to use images on their page. Obviously the safest pictures to use are your own (and certain pages should always have pictures – travel, recipes, pets, how-to-guides). You can find some images on the web but must note that most are NOT copyright free to use on creative commons pages (eg. Wikinut).

Of particular worry are celebrity photos as you probably not only infringing on copyright laws (images owned by the photographer) but also on images rights.

There are a few places a person can find copyright free images to use, but licensing should always be checked and the photo source should always be noted – giving credit where credit is due. Flicker -advanced search – has the option of clicking that you want to search for images that are safe to use on the creative commons.

Referral Links to Other Sites or Advertising

Many times we get pages that are written with other motives – to sell something – and they offer the reader no value. While embedding a link to ones own business is fine, its only good if the page actually offers value to the reader. I had one fellow write about a house for sell with a link to his real estate page, this is clearly an advertisement – not allowed, however other real estate agents have written links on how to sell a house, with no pressure, and lots of good information, and have quietly embedded their link in a non-pressure way – this is allowed.

Posting referral links for people to join other writing sites is not allowed, obviously Wikinut wants its readers and writers to stay here. Posting Wikinut referral codes is always allowed.

Tags

Wikinut does not reject a page that has no tags, but if your tags are not related, then your page is not accepted. I have also had to reject articles that have too many tags (more than 20) or have had unrelated tags.

Summary and Links

Please note: There are other reasons a page might be rejected, these are the most common ones. I would say in a day I reject about 5-10% of the pages that are submitted, some only need simple editing to fix a minor problem, others are due to the writer cheating.

It is simple to know why a page is rejected – Click your Messages and then Click the Message itself to read! Edit to make the changes needed. You should always read your messages, even when a page is accepted because Moderators sometimes will offer tips or point out minor problems that, with a little fixing, could make big improvements to your page!

Great article. This is one reason that I like wikinut so much more htan the other sites. There are at least some standards and controls. The moderators always give me helpful tips in their notes which has helped me to improve my writing. Thanks so much for writing these pages. They are a great help.

Very helpful for those new to Wikinut or new to writing for the web. But how about the people that are using the comment space on our pages for nothing more than a means to advertise the products they have for sale? Wikinut needs to develop a way to detect and delete those "comments." Wikinut has moderators to check what we submit for publication, why doesn't Wikinut have a couple of watchdog moderators to moderate the comments. There are software programs that are capable of detecting certain word patterns and could be programmed to detect the word patterns used in these ads. Once detected, they could flag them for human inspection and action.

lots of good tips -- but they dont help when you've forgotten what the moderator suggested-- and you want to put it back out ---..the reasons for rejected should be read before a page is ever written lol-- a friend of mine that joined kept telling me hes waiting -- so funny for a few weeks -- here he had his under draft !!! this is a little harder site tham most meaning not user friendly--you really have to figure how things work --especially the red and green on following and not following --got me really confused-- red means stop and green means go ---here it is the opposite --- and thanks for sharing your judging techniques... Great informative article, Mark, thank you for sharing this info. I have to agree with Jerry though, these constant adds are spoiling our work, can we have a way of deleting them? Congrats on a great Star Page...

Mark, I am sorry. I did not realize I was not allowed to republish the poems I have posted at another site. Please remove them and I will start over again. I do remember making a note of that on my first post and it was still published. I will refrain from doing that again in the future.

Another top article, Mark. i too, am very frustrated with the spammers. it really is getting much worse, probably because they are being left on - it encourages more spammers.

Mark, spot on my friend. Nice page and it spells it all out. I also want to tell you, I am sorry I didn't do my usual 'Thank you' when I sent my page in. You know I appreciate it but, that does not excuse my rudeness. I know y'all moderators have a lot on your plate. So, thank you. Always a pleasure reading a piece of your work. Thank you for sharing.:)

This great article told me lots of useful things. I'm a newbie to Wikinut and I'm enjoying my time here immensely. This site has much better quality of writing overall than my other main site, Triond. I love the moderators!

Mark,
To say the truth, you're the only captain of this Wikinut ship that makes me happy to be on board.

If nobody has told you that you're a star, remember; I say it now. This beautiful! You're the man.

Thanks for putting this colourful piece that's boasting of more colours rather just the usual monotonous black and white.

(GBY) God Bless You!
