Lots of women like playing football. Do you know that there are women’s football teams? Moreover there was a Women's World Cup in 1999.
Women's World Cup
Who won the World Cup in 1999? The answer is: the USA. They beat China one-nil in the final with a penalty. I'm talking about the Women's World Cup, of course. Over 90,000 people watched the final in Pasadena, Los Angeles. This is a record for a women's sporting event in the United States. Ten million people also watched the match on television.
Number 9 shirts
Before the tournament started, Mia Hamm, the scorer of over 100 goals in international football, made a TV advert with basketball legend. Michael Jordan. They asked 'moms and dads' from all over America to bring their families to the matches - and they did. During the tournament, young Americans happily wore number 9 shirts with 'Hamm’ on the back. Other women football players were often in the newspapers. We learnt a lot about them. For example, we know that the captain Julie Foudy loves doughnuts!
The USA won
However, the important thing was the football. In the semi-final match against Brazil, the USA won, but played quite badly and nervously. In the other semi-final, China easily beat the champions Norway by five goals to nil. In the final, the two teams played brilliantly, and showed they can play a 'male' sport successfully. After the final, President Clinton said: They played well. It was an exciting game.'
