A article covering the option of woodworking as a hobby and why it is my first choice.

Why woodworking as a hobby?

Out of all the modern day pass-times I would say that woodworking as a hobby is the most enjoyable. Not only are you learning a trade but you are also left with cool items that you can sell. When venturing in carpentry it is the individual who puts his mark on the finished piece and makes it unique - no two hand made items are the same.

Woodworking as a hobby can fast become a profession if you get immediate success with it. There is a market for hand made quality items as opposed to the horrible, cheap Scandinavian furniture store offerings. If you make sure your project is built in line with some good, easy to follow design plans then the outcome will always be professional enough to sell. The nice thing about working on one woodworking as a hobby project at a time is the lack of deadlines - you can take as long as you like and enjoy the process.

Finding a project to start is not at all difficult and you should be constantly surrounded by ideas. What I do is walk around the house and look at things that may look tired or need replacing or look for something the house does not have and probably needs. This can be anything - even a little storage box to keep your car keys in or your pencils for example, anything will do.

If you are serious about woodworking as a hobby then it may be an idea to construct some 'jigs' as your first project. Jigs are a very handy woodwork tool ( especially if you are a newbie working from home/garage ). I build simple jigs out of scrap birch plywood laying around the garden shed or house. These jigs can be used over & over to make more inlay and other types of woodworking projects.

Don't be afraid of a big project when it comes to woodworking as a hobby because anything is achievable. Take furniture for example, break it down and it's all very simple. Furniture and cabinets are basically boxes. Whether they are square, rectangle or some other geometric shape with smaller boxes inside them. Drawers for example are gliding boxes inside a larger box.

Woodworking as a hobby brings with it a lot of different benefits. As well as the previously mentioned selling of items you can save yourself a bundle by building household items instead of buying them.

It does feel good to make something with your own hands.
