Self esteem is a key to success. Some people are born with it, but many have to develop it by adopting a few strategies.

Self Esteem...

Self esteem is the value of a person which he recognizes by himself. It is one’s own worth. Self evaluation is an interesting practice if it is done for self improvement. It is an important part of individual’s personality.

Could it be developed?

Yes, some people are born with it, but Self esteem could be developed in a person by the passage of time. When a child tries a new thing and he fails… it’s not a big deal, let him try over and again to succeed. Don’t ruin his abilities and self esteem by your negative remarks. Do not yell at them. Your love develops a lot of confidence in their personalities.
Self esteem is a combination of development in various aspects such as psychological, spiritual, mental, social, moral and emotional improvement and it reflects on the whole personality by parents' right grooming.
.

Role of Society

Parents, teachers, family and friends count a lot to develop self esteem in an individual. Positive dealings, interaction and communication with society i.e. elders, friends and minors improves self esteem in a person a lot.

Personality Development by yourself

You are a great help for your own personality development.
Be organized, know the value of your time, be loyal to your friends and be broad minded all the time.
Do not underestimate yourself, explore your hidden abilities and use them. Every individual has self respect. Don't let yourself down. Learn to love yourself and appreciate yourself. Be aware of your qualities and try to polish them, enhance your good and positive sides of personality. Examine your own actions and learn to laugh at yourself too. Face your fears and learn from your failures. Nobody is perfect...so be yourself. The better you feel about yourself, the lesser you feel the need of showing off.
Remember! Nobody holds a good opinion of a man who holds a low opinion of himself!

Positive Attitude

Find the things that you don't like in you and make a plan to change them wisely.
Do things that make you feel attractive, Dress up nicely, Take care of your personal hygiene, practice good posture.
Pass a smile when you meet someone, compliment them if you notice something good.
Help others if you are able to, do some charitable work if it is possible within your resources.
Be positive, keep smiling, groom yourself, speak wisely, respect your elders, love kids, be humble with everyone, improve your general knowledge, wittiness and learn to share happiness!
Now see the magic in your self esteem!!

Some Don'ts!

You have to stop negative thinking
No Self pity
Avoid being sarcastic
Avoid yelling
Avoid backbiting and selfishness
Don’t breach any contract
Don't pass negative remarks
Don't lose your heart on other's negative remarks

always remember you cannot please everyone, so don't worry if some people having grudge against you in spite of your all efforts…that’s their problem not yours.

Great article.
I think it is the job of every parent to help their child with self esteem, but some parents think that helping their kid means allowing their kid to control them, which is wrong.

Very well elucidated, Zafar. For me, just being myself helps a lot. Not trying to live up to others' expectations - siva

It's difficult to practice these things sometimes. Life can be so overbearing sometimes, but, I'd rather live happy than sad so I prefer to give all those things listed a go on a daily basis.

Great article! It is so true that we need to do all we can to foster good self-esteem in the children of today. If they learn that failure is just a part of learning they will be so much happier in life.

When I was growing up, I had low self esteem. I was made fun of because the grandfather I adored didn't come fro the USA. I went everywhere with him. Kids called me the foreigner's granddaughter. I should have realized that wasn't so bad. At least I know where I came from. Living in a small southern town in the 60s, leaves you open to a lot of ignorant rednecks, who don't realize that the American Indian is the true American. I am also part American Indian. My father's mother and my mother's mother had Cherokee blood. I do not like rednecks to this day and I was born in a state where they are predominant. I have gained self respect for myself and realize those people who gave me a hard time were the people who don't deserve any respect. As a matter of fact most of the people who gave us a hard time are not respectable people.

Thank you Ghazala ... I understand 'Self Esteem' a lot better now in comparing ones personal well being vs their social ambitions ... It has been noted by many that a woman loves a man with a strong confidence, like experience it inspires and supports her ambitions.
