Elizabeth Warren, the junior senator from Massachusetts, is hardly a typical politician. In an era when virtually all our so-called representatives are bought and paid for by corporate interests, she speaks truth to power and lets the chips fall where they may.

Early life

Elizabeth Warren was born June 22, 1949, to working-class parents in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the fourth child of Pauline Reed and Donald Jones Herring. When young Elizabeth was twelve her father, a janitor, suffered a serious heart attack and could no longer work. The bills piled up and eventually the family lost its car because it could no longer make the loan payments. Elizabeth's mother found work in the catalog department at Sears Roebuck & Co., and Elizabeth, at thirteen, went to work as a waitress at her aunt's Mexican restaurant.

At Northwest Classen High School Elizabeth became the star member of the debate team and won the title as "Oklahoma's top high school debater," while competing against students from all over the state. She won a debate scholarship to George Washington University at the age of sixteen.

She quit college after two years to marry her high school sweetheart, Jim Warren, who became a NASA engineer. They moved to Houston, Texas, where she enrolled at the University of Houston, graduating with a degree in speech pathology and audiology.

Career

From the late 1970s into the 1990s, Elizabeth taught law at several universities around the country, having earned a law degree from Rutgers School of Law - Newark. In 1987 she joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania Law School and became a tenured professor. In 1992 she began teaching at Harvard Law School, where she became the Leo Gottlieb Professor of Law in 1995. Later that year she was asked to advise the National Bankruptcy Review Commission where she worked tirelessly to oppose legislation that would severely restrict the ability of consumers to file for bankruptcy. Her efforts proved unsuccessful, but in the process she became radicalized.

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

Warren advocated early and often for the establishment of a new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which was signed into law by Barack Obama in July, 2010. Warren worked to implement the establishment of the bureau, and liberal and consumer advocacy groups lobbied hard for her appointment to head the organization. She was strongly opposed by financial institutions and Republicans, however, and Obama, convinced she could not win confirmation, appointed Richard Cordray instead.

Running for Senate

Warren entered the race for Senate in the 2010 special election in Massachusetts after the death of Senator Edward Kennedy, against Senator Scott Brown, the Republican. Behind in the polls at the outset, Warren gave a speech in Andover where she replied to Republican charges that asking the rich to pay more in taxes amounted to "class warfare." She pointed out that no one grows rich in America without depending on infrastructure paid for by the rest of society. She stated:

"There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own...You moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for; you hired workers the rest of us paid to educate; you were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn't have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work that the rest of us did. Now look, you built a factory and it turned into something terrific, or a great idea. God bless. Keep a big hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is, you take a hunk of that and you pay it forward for the next kid who comes along."

The video quickly went viral, Warren surged in the polls, and she beat Brown handily, gaining almost 54 percent of the vote despite the efforts of the business community to defeat her. The political director of the United States Chamber of Commerce, Rob Engstrom, said "no other candidate in 2012 represents a greater threat to free enterprise than Professor Warren."

2012 Democratic National Convention

Warren's speech at the 2102 Democratic National Convention, immediately before Bill Clinton, thrust her squarely into the national spotlight. In it she positioned herself as the unrelenting champion of the middle and working classes. She said the middle class "has been chipped, squeezed, and hammered. People feel like the system is rigged against them. And here's the painful part: They're right. The system is rigged." She went on to say that Wall Street CEOs "wrecked our economy and destroyed millions of jobs, and they still strut around congress, no shame, demanding fasvors, and acting like we should thank them."

Her horoscope

The first thing this observer notices when looking at Ms. Warren's horoscope is the close conjunction between her Sun and Uranus in the ninth house. People born under close Sun-Uranus conjunctions invariably challenge conventional wisdom and the established order. In the ninth house, the conjunction speaks to her values, her ethics and her integrity. Here, the native always follows the dictates of conscience and speaks her truth as she understands it. This woman walks a very high road.

The Moon in Warren's birth chart is in the doggedly determined sign of Taurus, and in the eighth house it always needs to penetrate far beneath the surface to get to what is really real - to uncover the very essence and core of things. This is reinforced by the close conjunction of Mars with Mercury, lending a great drive and courage (Mars) to uncover the facts (Mercury). Warren will always work assiduously to get to the very bottom of things. Unlike most politicians, she is not at all afraid to pursue wherever the road to truth takes her.

Venus in very close conjunction to the mid-heaven or tenth house cusp assures great public popularity, while Jupiter, all alone in the northern hemisphere of the chart, reveals her to be incredibly secure at the very root of her being (fourth house).

Finally, Neptune's placement in Libra on the ascendant is the mark of an idealist (Neptune) who fights for what is just and fair (Libra).

Elizabeth Warren is a true populist (Sun-Uranus) and a dogged champion of the rights of ordinary people.

A person in politics needs to be able to stay true to themselves, she is a champion for the people, but can she be manipulated? So many become puppets, it is tragic

Thanks Steve for highlighting the life of a true hero. Obviously, Elizabeth Warren speaks her mind and fights for justice. Inspiring videos too. What she says is commonsense, but sad the reality is she has to fight for it against those who pretend not to hear, lost as they are in their selfish pursuits. What a world it will be when justice is served for all - siva

Good afternoon, Steve, thank you for this informative article about one of my heroes. Another Elizabeth Warren quote, "I'm really concerned that too big to fail has become too big to jail. That just seems wrong to me." Friends alerted me to her a few years back; she has not disappointed me yet. Again, thank you for this back story and the horoscope; you do such a great job of both and I appreciate your work, Steve. ~Marilyn
