A set of tools to help you achieve happiness in life & a reason you may fail.

You've been doing this all your life.

So you’ve accepted responsibility for your own life, feels good doesn’t it? Knowing that you are in control.

Now I’m going to show you how something you’ve been doing all your life will help you focus and move forwards.

It is Goal Setting.

You have been setting goals since you were a child, but you probably haven’t realised it until now. You don’t believe me? Didn’t you “want” an ice cream or toy as a child? That at it’s simplest is Goal Setting, deciding you want something and doing what’s needed to get it, usually through “pester power” when you’re young.

Unfortunately pester power doesn’t work so well in the adult world, unless you’re a salesman, but that’s a whole other can of worms!

So how do we use goals in everyday life?

You set the alarm to wake you in the morning - that’s a goal;
You go to the supermarket to buy food - that’s a goal;
You go to work to make money - that’s a goal;

You can see the pattern emerging here I hope, every day you unconsciously perform certain actions in order to achieve the desired result. What you are maybe not aware of is how to use this skill consciously to improve your life.

Releasing the power of Goal Setting.

The first step is to decide what you want. It sounds obvious, but, truthfully, do you REALLY know what you want? This is the hardest part, personally it took me a lot of soul-searching to realise what I really wanted out of life. I was Goal Setting on a grand scale! As they say “aim for the Stars and you will at least hit the Moon”.

The beauty of Goal Setting is that it is different for everybody, some people have grand dreams whereas others are generally content, but there are certain areas in their lives that need “tweaking”. Don’t feel compelled to try to make changes you don’t feel are necessary. This is a personal thing, only you know what you want.

Once you have decided on your goal or goals WRITE THEM DOWN!

This step is vitally important, so I’ll repeat it ... WRITE YOUR GOALS DOWN.

If you are in a relationship, share your goals with your partner if you haven’t already done so. My wife and I had the same main Life Goal and worked together to make it happen. As a result we’re living in the Caribbean, semi-retired, with the time to pursue our personal interests. Like I said we did Goal Setting on a grand scale.
One reason why you will be guaranteed not to achieve your goals.

There is really only one thing that will stop you achieving your goals, without exception. That is if your goals contradict your values.

Values are the set of rules you live your life by, your morality, conscience or social ethics. Let me try to explain.

Let’s say you have the goal - I want to be a Senior Partner by the end of the year - but in order to achieve that you have to totally discredit one of your co-workers who is next in line for the position. If your morality doesn’t allow you destroy another persons’ career you won’t achieve your goal. I know, it’s an extreme example, but it shows the principle of goals having to align with values in order to be achievable.

So there you have it, a brief introduction to Goal Setting and a lot of homework!

Hopefully you will be thinking about what you really want in life, sharing with your partner and writing the results down.

In the next article I will show you a technique for Supercharging your goals so that your success will be virtually guaranteed.

Until next time

Good article. What's the use of goal-setting if some one close to you doesn't buy into it? I've placed so many of my goals on my bedroom wall, year after year, but my wife doesn't even give it a cursory glance? Now I get told that I am in a relationship with my laptop. You see I am a journalist, who is planning to write a book - and it's causing a bit of ill-feeling. My better half says she supports me, but does she really know what it takes to actually write a book? Now this is my craft, I shouldn't let anyone come between, but because I feel I am being kept back, and also have a marriage to safeguard and respect, I have let the project wane. The same applies to my endeavours to branch out into photography. I've attended two courses already with a professional photographer - paid from hard-earned earnings and admittedly at the insistence of my wife, but does she really understand what it takes for me to become a seasoned photographer, who can earn some money for the family? Phew I need help and advice. I am so stuck in a rut as it concerns my creative nous. I know I am creative but I feel I'm being stunted. Also goals don't always pan out like you have arranged them. What about Mind Power and starting to visualize what you want to be or become? Will that help? Thanks and good luck.

Markthespark, Please keep this in the back of your mind, Your reality is different than everyone else and that includes everyone close to you. Don;t worry about their reality as you should only focus on yours and what makes YOU happy. Don't try to understand if she understands or not, that's not YOUR reality. Love unconditionally, don't judge yourself or her and live your reality! namaste!

You're in a tricky situation & I'm no relationship counsellor, so I won't get into that here.

Visualisation is a very powerful tool, it may be even more powerful if you share with your wife how you see your life changing AS A RESULT OF ACHIEVING YOUR GOALS. In other words, how you will change for the better with the satisfaction of actually fullfilling your goals & dreams. Maybe you will be happier? more relaxed? less frustrated? have more time more your family?

Somehow you need to get your wife emotionally & positively involved in your goals or, as you've found, it's nigh-on impossible to achieve them.

"if" is the middle-word of "life".
Life should never end with "what if".

I hope this helps

This was a great article. I recently (the last couple of years) have been taking the time to look inside to see who I was and what my dreams were. I then began acting on that. I wanted to help children, so I became a CASA. I've had a passion for writing for as long as I can remember, so I decided to go for it. I write on here and a couple of other sites.
Your article is timeless, and something everyone should do at some point in their lives.
Thank you.

Marcus, Your article is spot on, especially the part about knowing exactly what you really want! I just published my first kindle book about almost the same subject with a little bit of a twist. Great job!
