Is ARM working?

The server Calxeda company has demonstrated a machine with only ARM processors. The machine runs the operating system Ubuntu 12.04, Precise Pagolin. It runs the standard LAMP stack, node.js and Ruby On Rails.

The server consists of a cluster of Calxeda's Energy Cards. The system consists EnercyCards, blade servers with four ARM chips. With a thermal design power of 20 watts, the blades consume a lot less than their counterparts from Intel. And that also means that they are cheaper to keep them running.

The blades themselves are not new. They were already proposed in November of last year, but now there is a working machine shown that use it. A 2U enclosure supports up to 48 quad-core nodes with 300 watts to 24 SATA drives.

According to the makers, the server is welcome news for the Linux community. Compiling a Linux kernel now takes less than an hour on a single node, which is a quarter the time is now needed. With full and Calxeda cluster would compile a whole distro just hours instead of weeks.

Why ARM?
But why the hell you're an ARM chip in a server stop? This processor architecture is designed for mobile telefoons. In running a data center it is primarily about computing?

First, there is the energy efficient design. With data centers are bursting, electricitaitsrekening swings the rocketing. Savings are therefore welcome. The processors themselves would also be inexpensive. Also convenient. Moreover begin the functionality of x86 processors are increasingly coming back into ARM chips.

More information on why Ubuntu on ARM can be found on the Ubuntu site .
