Windows Vista is one of the operating systems of the Windows series. Released in 2007, the operating system included many new features. Overall, the Visa OS got a fairly mixed response, while some were very satisfied others were less so.

About Windows Vista

As mentioned, Vista introduced a number of new features which enhanced its presentation and options. Such new features included some of the following:

•Windows Aero

Windows Aero was the new default theme for Windows Vista. This include a variety of fancy windows effects including such things as transparent windows, windows previews from the toolbar, subtle windows animations as well as flip 3D which previewed windows in 3D.

• Windows Sidebar

The Windows sidebar was a new feature included with Windows Vista. This was really a desktop sidebar which included a variety of widgets that could be added to the Vista sidebar. With this, clocks, calendars, picture frames, and notes could be added to the sidebar among others.

• Search features

Searching was made more effective in Windows Vista with instant search. As such, search boxes were included in the Vista start menu, as well as folders.

• Additional software

Aside from this, Vista included some new Windows software. Such software as the media center, media player 11, Windows photo gallery, and Windows calendar were included with the Vista OS. Along with this, the Windows games were tweaked a little bit, along with Windows accessories.

• Windows Explorer

Explorer was also revamped in Vista, with the task pane removed. A favourites pane is included on the left side for a variety of folders and searched folders. A breadcrumb trail was also added the the Explorer address bar.

These were just a few of the new features and additions that were included with the Windows Vista OS. Overall, Windows Vista had six additions each of which had some variations. The six editions of Vista include: Vista Home starter, Vista Home Basic, Vista Home Premium, Vista Business, Vista Enterprise, and Vista Ultimate.

Given that these editions of Vista did not all include exactly the same features, they had variable system requirements. The likes of Vista Ultimate has the most extensive system requirements, with up to 128 GB of RAM required. Although, minimum requirements can be 512 MB for basic Vista editions. As such, upon release the Vista hardware requirements were quite steep which made upgrading from XP less likely.

Today however, the hardware requirements are not so much of an issue. Despite the critics, Vista had some innovative and exciting features. For further details about Windows Vista OS, the Vista website is recommended.
