This pages states the meaning of Aerodynamics and explains why it is used

Aerodynamics

Aerodynamics is the effects of the air that push against things as they move. In more technical terms aerodynamics is study of forces and the resulting motion of objects through the air. This can happen to anything that moves on earth. When you look on Television you see the sprinters and the swimmers wearing this smooth clothing so that the air does not have as much drag on them as they swim or run. Cars and automobiles are the same, the car designers have to design a car that has been tested in wind tunnels so that it has the least amount of drag as possible. Drag is a force generated by a solid object moving through a fluid. A fluid is a liquid or air. This affects cars because it limits the top speed and the economy because the engine has to work harder to get you to go faster.
