Alabama Heatwave: Bugg says "Give your Dogs, Water or Ice Baby!"

We are in the hottest months we have here in the deep south and as you fill yourself with life saving water to cool down. Do not forget about your pet, they too need to keep hydrated to stay alive.

Not Me!

At times I can not even kick (not literally) the dogs out of the house, as it is too hot here in the deep south during the summer months. We must remember dogs do wear fur coats. Then tack on the fact that our air conditioner went out last week and then you have a super hot situation on your hands.

For the few days we went without air conditioning and the temperature being up in the 100's and then top it off with extreme humidity, it was not difficult but, it did take some extra precautionary measure to make sure not only I but also, Bugg and Sweet Tee were kept cool.

I know of one sure way to get Bugg off that porch and that is to play water with him, Sweet Tee is always game but you must remember, Sweet Tee is also just a little over a year old, it is hard keeping a puppy down.

So three times during those non-air conditioning days, I would get the dogs out and squirt them with the water hose, as they ran around trying to catch the water. This gave the two guys a little exercise but also, it cooled them down in the process.

Ice, Ice, Baby!

When you take your dog outside to play during the summer time heat, make sure you 'always' have either water or ice available for them, at all times!

I use ice for both Bugg and Sweet Tee, I started using ice for our dogs when we first added Bugg to our family. I researched both breeds Bugg's parents are and I found out that a big barrel chested dog (like Bugg) could develop a condition called 'bloating', also known as volvulus or torsion.

Remember: Keeping your dog hydrated during this 'hot' time of the year is very important and one chore, you should never slouch on!

Bored, Not!

Bugg will be three years old in November so he is pretty much calmed down but, he is still a very active guy. Then once again, we have Sweet Tee whom is just a little over a year old and is prone to boredom.

To combat this during the summer time, I will take the guys on the front porch. They have access to the outside world and all that is going on but yet, it is in the shade. Even though Bugg and Sweet Tee have quite a bit of room to roam around on our big porch, it also stops them from being able to go on a full out run.

As the squirrels run around the trees, the dogs will run back and fourth barking at them and it seems to entertain them and yet, they are still getting a bit of exercise.

Make sure you take the time to not only stimulate their bodies by exercise but also, stimulate their minds. A few distractions while sitting on your porch (cars, squirrels, cats, people) can be your best friend or take this time to practice their commands.

Remember: A bored dog/puppy, can be a bad boy/girl!

You 'must' let Them Play!

No matter how hot it is, you must let them play and get their exercise. The best time to make them do a full out run hard and play would be, both in the early morning and later at night, after the sun has gone down.

When you are outside with your dogs, have water/ice available for them at all times and to be honest, at times I must make them stop playing and take a drink or chew on some ice.

Remember: When dogs start playing they do not realize they need water and that there is dangerous heat all around them but, you do!

Here's 'your' Sign!

I have one sure way of telling if Bugg and Sweet Tee are starting to over heat and that would be by how low their tongue is hanging. This is the time to get them inside and give them time to cool down.

When our air conditioner was not working, I made sure we had circulation by turning on the ceiling fans and also I brought out a few box fans. This helped all three of us to be able to keep cool, during those very hot days.

Remember: When your dog's tongue goes to the side and starts to go to the ground, get them cooled down!

But 'no' Worries!

I have this under control and if it just so happens (as if) that this young puppy named Sweet Tee does not want to listen to me, I do have my Bugg whom has this Tee by the tail.

Hey dear Denise, The way you have explained the things here about the beating the heat for your dogs, the Vets like me will starve and die of hunger for the lack of clients! LOL! Beautiful one I must say truly deserving the star!

This is such a vibrant and playful article while at the same time we can learn something of great value. Your dogs are so adorable. I bet you have a world of fun with them. My dog is around 10 years old but he loves going outdoors with me and if it not too hot he likes to chase a stick and he also loves watching me feed the fish in the pond. Thanks for sharing such joy with us!

Boo back in 2009 and his son Max, 2010, they were 13 and 11. I still miss them to this day. Thank you for your kind words. As always hon, thank you for stopping by.:)
