When Alexander became king of the kingdom of Macedonia in 336 BC, he was only 20. Despite his youth, he immediately embarked on a military campaign that won him the greatest empire the world had ever seen and earned him the title “Alexander the Great”.

Victory over Persia

Alexander was a military genius of extraordinary energy and courage, who inspired great loyalty in his soldiers. He continued the task of expanding Macedonian territory that his father and Philip II of Macedon had begun after the civil war. He led soldiers into Asia Minor and set out to destroy the Persian army. He defeated the Persian rulers of Asia Minor and also went on to defeat Darius III, the Persian king, at the Battle of Issus. Darius fled and Alexander marched on to Egypt, where he overpowered the Persian governors and was crowned King of Egypt. But his greatest battle was yet to come. Soon he destroyed the entire Persian army. Once again, Darius escaped, but the Greeks followed him and he was finally murdered by his own troops. Alexander was crowned King of Persia.

Building an Empire

Alexander’s army marched over thousands of miles and acquired an empire that stretched as far as northern India. Along the way, he founded several cities, including Alexandria in Egypt.

Alexander’s Army

Alexander’s army was made up of 5,000 horsemen. His infantry consisted of 30,000 foot soldiers, some armed with spears, others with javelins, bows and arrows, slings, and stones. The army was divided into units of 49 men. Each unit charged in a wedge-shape, to break up a phalanx of enemy foot soldiers. His foot soldiers moved in from behind to finish off the enemy with hand-to-hand fighting.

The End of an Era

Alexander’s soldiers won every battle they fought, but by the time they reached India many of them refused to go on. So, Alexander turned back to Persia with part of his army. They reached Babylon, but he caught a fever and died, aged only 32.

My son's middle name is Alexander so my husband and I could add "The Great" when we said it. If we'd had a daughter, her middle name would have been Catherine for the same reason. Thanks for the share.
