All Souls Day is celebrated by most of the Christian denominations in the month of November. Here is a detail about how the Hindus celebrate it in the month of July.

Hindu All Souls Day

Almost all religions, especially the religions of the East, give importance to the new moon day for their rituals and religious ceremonies. They consider that this day links the present, past and future of all the living beings. The Hindus observe fasting on this day and offer sacrifices for the departed souls of their relatives. They perform special pooja or religious ceremony for the peaceful rest of the departed souls of their foefathers.

July New Moon Day- All Souls Day of The Hindus

The new moon day that occurs in the middle of July is called Pithru Day, meant for remembering parents, teachers and all those who helped and guided us. The Hindus pray for the repentance of those elders and see God's mercy for their souls. This whole month Karkkitaka(from the middle of July to the middle of August) is considered as the moth of rituals and prayers since it is said to be the month of misfortunes and diseases.

The new moon day has got a very great significance in remembering the departed elders praying for them and praying to them since they had give us our body, knowledge, wealth, culture, and all that we have. It is the day of remembering them in gratitude. It is our duty to pray for their "rest in peace". That is why the Hindus observe this day as 'All souls day'.

July New Moon Day A Day of Repentance

The rituals do not end in praying for the forefathers. They leave an exemplary tradition of sacrifice to our following generations. It brings blessings for us as well as for our descendents. The Hindus visit temples on the banks of rivers, dip into the holy waters, offer sacrifices and purify themselves. They keep a portion of food called 'pindam' in their offering, containing sesame, flowers and spices. Sesame offering marks the tribute the elders. There is a belief that God incarnated from the black sesame.

The Significance of This Forefathers Day

Modern life has become very busy not knowing even the name of the neighbor residing next to our door. It is our duty to think ad be grateful to our forefathers. The Christians believe n the eternity of the departed souls and pray for them in a special day on the All Souls Day. After all we are not islands. We are connected by generations of human beings. The new moon day that falls in July paves way for the continuation of a good meaningful tradition.

In Andhra Pradesh, we call it Polala Amavasya. A woman by name, Poli is worshipped on this day. We lit lamps, offer sweets (Polis) and send her to Heaven.

New generation has it own ways of thinking and looking at the things, that is for sure, but than to achieve success it is a combination of knowledge, experience and energy.

Thus the new generation will always need a word of advice from the older generation.
