The Tomb Raider game series has been one of the most exciting multi-platform game series on a variety of game consoles. With fantastic 3-D graphics and enthralling gameplay the series has millions of fans. The Tomb Raider game series stars Lara Croft, an archaeologist in pursuit of a variety of artifacts across the world.

An Introduction to the Tomb Raider Game Series

The Tomb Raider game series is an action/adventure game series. The games are essentially third person perspective, a platform game and shoot-em-up combination. It includes a variety of arsenal to select from such as sub-machine guns, pistol, shotgun, rifle and grenades to take out the enchanted wildlife on the various levels. Be it sharks, bears, tiger, birds or even dinosaurs Lara has the equipment required.

The Tomb Raider game series dates back to 1996 when the first Tomb Raider game made its début. This first game of the series was published by Eidos. The game was a big hit on its various formats, and ensured the take off of the Tomb Raider game series. It was a template for 3-D action/adventure games.

Another highlight of the Tomb Raider game series, aside from its great 3-D graphic engines, are the variety of level settings. Each of the Tomb Raider game has included a number of game settings and locations such as the Great Wall, Atlantis, the Antarctica, South Pacific, Mexico and Nevada. Here Lara searches for a variety of archaeological artifacts.

Since the first Tomb Raider game a number of Tomb Raider games have followed. A trilogy of Tomb Raider games first expanded the game series in the '90s. After this a new generation of Tomb Raider games followed with exciting new game engines such as Tomb Raider Legend and Tomb Raider Underworld. For the 10th anniversary of the Tomb Raider game series there was also Tomb Raider Anniversary. In total there have been about eight Tomb Raider games in the series to date, and a ninth is also scheduled for 2012.

Aside from the extensive game series, Tomb Raider is the only game to have a series of films. There have been two Tomb Raider films, the first of which was Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. This was followed up with a sequel that was Lara Croft: Cradle of Life. With a potential third Tomb Raider movie it could be the first game to have a trilogy of films.

Today the Tomb Raider game series remains among the biggest game series on any console. Only a few game series have more game titles than Tomb Raider. For further details on the Tomb Raider game series, check out the Tomb Raider website.
