An overview of Asian languages.

This article gives an overview of some of the widely spoken languages of the Asian continent.

Introuction

Asia is the largest continent in the world. It covers approximately 29.9% of the Earth's land area. It also houses nearly 60% of the planet's human population speaking different languages. Asia has given birth to many great languages. There are many countries in Asia where more than one language is spoken. For instance, in India more than 800 languages are spoken.

Most widely spoken languages of Asia.

More than 2000 languages are spoken in Asia. Here is an overview of some of the languages which are used by majority of the population in the region:

-Mandarin: This is the official language of the Chinese government. More than 800 million people speak this language. Mandarin language contains more than twenty consonants and more than ten vowels. Wu and Cantonese are other languages spoken by the people living in China.

-Hindi: More than 220 million people use Hindi to communicate. It is one of the official languages of the government of India and is written in the Devanagari script. Hindi speaking people are concentrated in northern and central parts of India. There are many wonderful literary works in this language. Movies in Hindi are becoming popular all over the world. Telugu, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu and Kannada are other languages spoken by significant number of people in India.

-Arabic: This language which has three vowels is widely used by the people living in the western part of Asia. The uniqueness in the Arabic writing system is that it is written from right to left. Koran, the holy text for the people following Islam, is written in this language.

-Japanese: This is the official language of Japan. More than 130 million people speak Japanese and this language is written with a combination of three scripts.

-Bengali: This language is used by the people of Bangladesh. It is also spoken in West Bengal and other states in the eastern part of India.

English, Thai, Sinhalese, Malay, Burmese, Hakka, Indonesian, Hebrew, Lao, Maldivian, Kurdish, Armenian, Kazakh, Vietnamese, Korean, Persian, Tibetan and Nepali are other languages spoken in various countries of this great continent.
