Are Asians The Smartest Race?

Asians are often stereotyped as being freakishly smart by their classmates.

Are Asians Smarter?

Ask any kid in grade school, and s/he will probably tell you that the smartest person in their class is an Asian. Why is this? Are Asians just naturally smart? Is that another piece of evidence proving that America deserves its place as the 17th smartest country in the world?

There are a few theories why Asian Americans seem smarter than their European counterparts. However, there is no real proof that all Asians are smart, just a select few. Yes, there are Asians who just don't try in school, just like every other race. And there are Asians who do try, just like every other race. I am not trying to be racist here; if you think I am, then skip to the last couple paragraphs.

One theory is that Asians, during the Ice Age, were under the harshest of conditions. They had to use their brains more to survive. Now, we all know that the more you exercise your brain, the smarter you are. The people had to fight to survive, something that may have survived throughout the ages. However, Europeans were exposed to the same ferocity of the Ice Age as Asians, and studies have shown that Asian Americans are smarter than Caucasians.

Another theory that is out there is that the teachings of Confucius, Mencius, and other great Asian philosophers taught that education was very important. Asians strived more to learn, and their love for learning was passed down generation after generation. This caused many Asian discoveries, such as paper, rocketry, gunpowder, etc. However, Europeans also had many significant discoveries, many that were even more sophisticated than the Asians'. Some expanded on the Asian inventions, such as Johannes Gutenberg's printing press or the invention of firearms. So that theory is not totally correct.

However, the theory I think is true is the immigrant theory. Many Asian immigrants came to the United States for a better life, to get a better job, and make more money. Many of these people didn't have a lot of money when they came, so they had to save, save, save money whenever they could. These Asians emphasize education to their kids, making it seem to them as education is the top priority to get a good job. The parents always are heavily expectant on their children, putting pressure on their children to succeed not only in school, but in life. There is lots of discipline. The kids have to try harder, put more effort in their work, etc. So, the real reason that Asians seem smarter isn't because they actually are, but because they are under pressure to get good grades. For their parents, getting straight A's are expected.

In conclusion, anyone can seem smart. But doing well in school takes effort, time, studying. And Asian parents expect that kind of stuff from their kids. Because it's the Asian way. However, studies have shown that when the kids grow up, and have kids of their own, their kids are more Americanized and do slightly worse in school, and so do their kids. Most likely this is because their parents put less pressure on them.

What I'm saying is that really, to do well in school, one must try hard and put in effort. There is a direct correlation between studying and grades. Does that mean that Americans don't study? Well, no. But many don't study enough. Why is that? Is it because many Caucasians are more focused on social life and sports than academics, while Asians are generally more focused on education then sports, creating the classic image of the "geek." Of course, there are exceptions to all generalizations, and this is not different. Many Caucasians are smarter than Asians, and many Asians are more occupied on making the basketball team or scoring the game winning goal in soccer. It depends on the type of person you are.

Each one of us are born with different IQ.But IQ can be enhanced. IQ+Effort=Smart. Funny but being the eldest in the family I am considered the most expected child to take over my parents responsibility while my younger siblings are not. I didn't take much of my free time. I usually spending it in the library. I was not born smart but with study I believe I gain more knowledge than my younger sister and brothers. And turn out more successful than them.
Thanks N.Sun!!! It's a very interesting Article.

White people are historically the smartest race to ever exist. If any of you kenw your history or knew world and technological history you would never have argued this. If you look on any site listing inventions and discoveries of the past 1000 years (including astronomy, mathematics, sciences, biology, eugenics, etc) almost everything has been discovered by European individuals. This also leads into music and film and book as well. The entire debate is incontestable to be honest.

In fact, the smartest person in Canada right now is a white girl under 30 years old.

Yes, some Asians are smart but there is no congenital reason why; some are just forced to study 15 hours a day which also makes them suffer in the long run. This explains why so many Asians lack creativity in music and arts and why a lot of their work is copied or "kitsch" (just buy any Made in China product) Saying an Asian is smartest is just a generalization started in Asian films from the 90's and comedy films...kind of like the generalization that Black men are more heavily endowed in a certain area than other races when a study showed that they were actually a half centimetre shorter.

But there are a lot of smart African Americans too regardless of what the masses think....whereas Chinese are known for inventing "Gunpowder", a lot of backs contributed more to the world than any Chinaman ever did.

China was more advanced than any other western civilization for thousands of years. It is one of the ancient civilizations.

The reason why China was overtaken by westerners is due to isolation policies adopted a few hundred years ago allowing the country to miss the industrial revolution that spread through Europe.

Chinese inventions and discoveries had a huge impact on the development of the European countries with Marco Polo. Basically China did all the hard, smart work and then western countries come over and steal it and call themselves the smartest race. Nice :)

Lol. Don't be such a hater. 9 out of 10 things were invented in Asia.

Hours of studying does not always get you good grades. I used to tutor kids and some just don't seem to get it no matter how hard they study.

My parents immigrated from Vietnam after the communists took over the south and were dirt poor. When they had me, they told me why education is important. They were starving and had no real opportunity to go to school because they were busy working to make enough money to buy a lousy dumpling that would last just one day. Their past makes their expectations of me high and, as a child, I aim to please them and myself. If I get good grades, they're happy and that's all they want from me - A good education. It's not for them, it's for me because they don't want to see me go through what they went through. I'm relatively smart, academically to be more precise, but not because I was 'born that way'. Anyone can get a 96 average in school so long they put a lot of effort in it. I was drilled to study hard and reach great heights and I'm not letting that go anytime soon; this is how I was raised. It depends ont he individual, not the race and your article is basically spot on. Each race has the genuises and each race has its high and low points.

It is what you want to pursue, to become in life. There is no smart race per se. Talent is universal - siva
