Avoiding Pickpocketers

Whether China, Pakistan or the USA, pickpocketers prowl every corner of the Earth, lying in wait for their victims who are unsuspectingly walking into their trap. Many incidents involve distractions, but sometimes, these distractions are mobile, are sentient and may also have beefy fists. If you wish to avoid it, these steps can help.

Pickpocketers

Crime never sleeps!
People have lost more than just money because of pickpocketers crawling around the Earth. But this can all be avoided. Some pickpocketers just play it simple: They sneak up behind you and without you knowing, they snatch your wallet from your back pocket. Other, however carry out a more complex system which normally involves more than one person. Either way, their goal is common and simple: Take money.

The Simple Way

The simple way, being...simple is also the most common way. A pickpocketer comes up to you and takes your wallet without you knowing. The most simple method is to keep your belongings elsewhere where you can keep sight of it. However, the main problem is that you never know where pickpocketers are going to strike. When walking around the street, lookout for distraction points such as sign posts or posters. They tend to distract the victim and while their busy making out what the poster or sign etc. is saying, the pickpocketers would've already done their work. So, when you come across anything that may distract you which apparently is in a crowded area and you stop to look at it, immediately reach out to your back pocket and make sure you wallet is there. Your hand may just connect with another hand instead of your wallet. Avoiding the simple method of pickpocketing may be easy, but to elude the complex way, it would need a little more tricks because you may be dealing with more than just one pickpocketer.

The Complex Way

When you're walking around the streets, some guy or girl may come to you and start asking directions or the time or any other question. By the time the conversation is over, you realize your wallet is gone and you do not know who to chase. The guy/girl is gone as well.
Yes! This is the complex way! One serves as the distraction while the other takes the wallet. Avoiding this may be easy but it is risky as well. Occasionally, someone may come up to you and strike up a conversation with you. Talking to a complete stranger, well, that has got to be trouble.
Anyways, when talking to a stranger, keep a lookout immediately after the stranger comes to you. Grab your wallet and put it in your front pocket or any place where you can see it. Just hope there are civilians nearby. Or losing your money would be the least of your problems.
Now this is the risky part: there is greater size in number and this may be an advantage to the pickpocketers. They may become...brutal if things do not go their way. S/he may be short-tempered or an ex-con. These methods aren't foolproof but they can work at a great extent.

Out Of The Frying Pan But Not Yet In The Fire!

I have met many people here on Wikinut who have experienced pickpocketing and I can thank God it hasn't happened to me. And hopefully, it will never happen.
As I have stated in one of my other articles, I have never seen the face of a criminal and that includes pickpocketers.
But I have heard incidents such as the ones mentioned above that have been thwarted resulting in consequences for the pickpocketers. The threat of pickpocketers is boiling over the top but it hasn't penetrated the outdoors yet! It can still be curbed if people just remain cautious.

Right dude. I, myself had become also a victim of pickpocket here in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia - inside the bank where I was remitting my money for my family in Philippines.

Nice article on pickpocketing. Here in Sudan, the open markets are full of them. We don't even take a wallet or purse into these places. We stash them, uhhhmmm, elsewhere....., yeah that's a good word to use. When I first came here from the USA, a small town, I had no idea how vicious pickpocketers can be. All I can say is WOW!!
