This beginner's guide can help you reset your forgotten Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista and XP password easily.

Lost or Forgot Windows Password?

Forgetting Windows password is always an unpleasant situation, especially if you have misplaced the password of the only administrator account on your computer. The first thing you should do is to check if you've turned on the Caps Lock key, and try every possible passwords in your head. If you still couldn't recall your password, simply follow this beginner's guide to resetting forgotten Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista and XP passwords.

Method 1: Use Hidden Administrator (for Windows 7/Vista/XP)

In Windows 7 or earlier version, there is a hidden account named ‘Administrator', and it has no password by default. This account doesn't show up in the login screen until you boot Windows into Safe Mode. In the event that you forgot your Windows user password, you can use the hidden administrator to access your computer.
1. While turning on your computer, quickly press F8 key until your screen displays the Advanced Boot Options.
2. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to choose "Safe Mode" and press Enter.
3. On the Safe Mode login screen, Click the Administrator account and leave password field blank.
4. Once you're logged in, open the Control Panel, then User Accounts. Once there you can easily change any user passwords.

Method 2: Reset Microsoft Account Password (for Windows 10/8)

When you set up a Windows 10 or 8 computer, it strongly suggests that you sign in with a Microsoft account. If you forgot your password and couldn't log into your PC, you can use another device to go online and reset your password via Microsoft account password reset page. During the password reset procedure, you need to receive a security code using the email address or phone number associated with the Microsoft account.

Method 3: Use Password Recovery Utilities

If you still can't access your Microsoft account or you forgot the local administrator password, you then need some third-party password recovery utilities. I recommend you use PCUnlocker which works with all versions of Windows from Windows 10 to Windows XP. PCUnlocker is a self-contained environment that can run from a bootable CD or USB drive.
Once booted to the PCUnlocker program, select your local user and click the "Reset Password" button to remove your Windows password. If the selected local account is attached to a Microsoft account, the program will activate the local account so you can still access your computer locally after forgetting a Microsoft account password.

Method 4: Restore or Reinstall Windows

The last option is to restore your computer to a recent backup point you created earlier. Doing a clean install of your Windows is also the very last option you should try, but it will mean actually losing all of your data and files.
