Vegetables seem to grow better when surrounded by some species of plants. This article gives an overview of companion planting and provides a list of companion plants for vegetables.

Best Companion Plants for Vegetables

Companion planting is the practice of growing certain types of plants together. It is observed that they benefit in each others' presence. For example you can grow pest repellent plants in your vegetable garden. Companion planting is a common practice in gardening. Generally members of the same botanical family grow well together.

Here is a list of companion plants which seem to glory in each other's company:

Tomatoes and Basil appear to be the best of friends in the vegetable world. They accompany each other from the garden to the pizza!

Beans, cabbage, corn and horseradish are good companion plants for potatoes.

Celery, dill, onions and potatoes are good companion plants.

Dill and cucumber make great companion plants.

Rosemary, oregano and sage are very good companion plants for vegetables belonging to the brassica family (cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, etc).

Brassica family members also get along very well with the members of the allium family (onions, garlic etc).

Legumes like peas and beans are good companion plants for plants belonging to brassica family. Peas and beans are found to retain nitrogen in the soil. This benefits other vegetable plants immensely.

Asparagus, marigold, lettuce, mint, onion, stage, stinging nettle, sow thistle and cucumber are good companion plants for tomatoes.

African Marigold is a very good companion plant for vegetables. They are popular with gardeners all over the world due to their pest repellent properties.

Foxglove plants make excellent companion plants for vegetable plants. It is observed that foxglove plants resist diseases in other vegetable plants.

I am going to have to earmark this page for planting season. What a very interesting read. Great research. Well I am back on vacation for the next week but, I saw your article on the front page and I had to stop by and say hi.

Foxglove is also poisonous.. so I prefer to avoid it at all times!
Otherwise great info for gardeners.
