Discharging one’s anger is very necessary. Anger demands expression. If you have recognized young anger, own it as yours; it becomes easier to determine how you would discharge it, rather than how it could discharge you. The best way to discharge anger is either through talking about the anger situation with a trusted friend or professional.

The Discharge Of Anger

An angered person is better off, discharging anger than internalizing it, which often leads to dangerous ill health/medical conditions, such as heart problems, high blood pressure, digestive problems and migraine headaches to mention but a few.

Anger may be rooted in feelings of being unloved. Such individuals raised with this anger feeling group up feeling that they cannot trust others to treat them right. This attitude often shows bitterness and a lack of forgiveness. As a result of this suppressed anger, during childhood, many individuals have been known to cultivate a long-term habit of repressed anger, which has made it difficult for them to recognize their anger. To such persons, their present anger may not be at a recent situation or person, but about something in their childhood, eg, from parental lack of love.

How To Overcome Anger

• Individuals should endeavour to recognize their anger for what is truly is, and not other emotion
• Individuals should learn to pinpoint the cause of the anger through an Anger log which seeks to record the incident, date and time, cause, level and duration of anger, as well as how you feel about such an anger.
• They should learn to keep things in proper perspective. You need to know when something is trivial and not worth an argument. Often unnecessary energy of the angered person is wasted on trivial issues.
• Individuals are urged to be patient. When a person is angry, taking a time out is a rewarding way to overcome the anger. Often people take time out to engage in some physical activities such as physical exercises, which often relieve the tension from the anger.
• They are also urged to write down how they feel about the anger.
• Individuals could also use humour to diffuse their anger incidents.
• They are advised not to react when they are extremely angry to persons or situations. Instead, they are advised to investigate and put things in proper perspective before they react angrily to persons or situations.

Finally, individuals are urged to be careful at making angry statements. Making generalized statements often lead to angry reactions from people. For example, making a statement such as ‘Women today are very angry at men’, may lead to angry reactions. The same is true as to the fact that individuals should be careful not to pick up the spirit of the world such as ‘Men get into relationships just for sex’ or ‘women have sex to tie men down into serious relationships’ etc. The observation and experience of few should not be used to condition the majority.
