Book lover

I must say, I find television very educational. The minute somebody turns it on, I go to the library and read a good book." Groucho Marx. .

beginning

I like reading books. From very early age I have been reading everything I could lay my hands on. While eating out at a roadside eatery, I would even read the paper my pakoras (mouth watering Indian dish deep fried in oil) were wrapped in. When my father took us for a long drive, I read all the hoardings, all the signs on all shops on the way.

As a result of my love for books, I ended up loving school and college. I was never bored while reading history, geography, economics and even physics .
Although chemistry and mathematics were something a different matter entirely. So I sailed through school and college easily.

journey

But then I got engaged and married. I immensely enjoyed all the attention and pampering by all my loved ones. So for a time being, my books were put aside. Immediately after our marriage, we had planned to go to Nepal. While we were packing, I took some books in my bag. My husband looked at me strangely and asked unknowingly, “Books?”
“Off course” I said. “I cannot sleep if I do not read something.”
“Sleep?” he repeated wonderingly. And so began our journey.
In time my husband, who considered books as a best friend of man, revised his opinion. He started thinking that maybe books were more of a friend to a woman than a man.

...

I always wanted to surprise my husband with tasty and savoury delicacies. I had to unfortunately go to kitchen and cook if I wanted to do that. I used to start cooking but the unfinished book always called me. The book, which lay on the bed, or on the sofa of the living room, or on the dining table, always called out to me like a siren that used to call out to the Greek sailors, tempting me to pick it up, tempting me to read it.

BUT NO I had to prepare those tasty dishes for my husband. I should not be tempted. I should resist. And before I would know, I had a book in my hand. I would be lost in its story, its charm, and its characters and immerse into the imaginary world of the author. Smoke always used to wake me up to the reality that my food had burned to ashes. There go my tasty and savoury delicacies. Maybe my husband would like a take away tonight. Now where was I, and I am back in the book.

...

Over the years, during good times and bad times books have been a constant in my life, sort of security blanket for me. My husband respects my love for books .For me books are hard bound drugs, with no danger of overdose.

I find books are more stimulating than most of the shows on TV. The latter are marketing gimmicks - don't have a soul! Thanks Neeta for the share. I too love reading, mostly insightful articles on any topic - siva

Very great and well read article too
Congrats but all I’d like to add is this
read as much as you can
remain silent more….
then compose
and make sure
that you are also read
as much as those
who you have read before …
then alone your reading will be worth its while
else look at me
like a Rose and just simply smile
then you will also pass
all your worthwhile while
