Working with textures in Photoshop can open many doors into your imagination and can improve and change uninteresting shots dramatically. A photo can go from boring to better with a little creativity.

A cold and gloomy day is not an excuse to stay inside

It was a cold and gloomy day, but I wanted to get out and take some photos and to get some fresh air. I went to the lake to look for a beaver I knew had been busy in the area a while ago. A few trees had been chewed down and were blocking the outlet from the lake so there was no doubt that Mr Beaver had been around. There was no sign of him, but I was determined to bring home some new photos so I started to look for something else to shoot.

A Piece of Art under the Ice

Alongside the waterfront the leaves that had fallen off the trees were covered by ice. I knew there was a piece of art somewhere under the ice, but the light was very dim and did not give enough texture to the ice and the leaves underneath it. I still thought it was something in there that I could use so I shot a few frames. Then I uploaded them to my computer and forgot them for a few months.

Poster Edge Filter

The photo was very dull and had no depth, so to give it more texture and make it more interesting I used the filter POSTER EDGE in Photoshop. Since I’ve been working on abstracts lately I remembered that I had taken these not so good photos and thought I would try to make something cool out of them. I picked a blue abstract that I took this summer and added it to one of the “leaves under ice photos” using Photoshop .

Adding the Abstract

Normally I would use FILE-PLACE to add the blue image on top of the leaves, but this time I did the opposite and used PLACE to add the leaves as the top layer. That way the blue abstract became the bottom layer. The blending mode I picked for the leaves image was Linear Light. I kept the opacity at 100%.

The Result

It’s incredible what you can do with some colors and a dull photo, a little creativity and Photoshop!
