Calvin Klein a Designer With Images That Make a Lasting Impression

Calvin Klein ads have been the subject of interest and controversy for many years. I wonder how most people feel about these ads. Do they go too far for fashion?

Calvin Klein Ads Boldly Different

Calvin Klein has been in the fashion industry since the 1960's and along the way he has grown into quite a talented but controversial man, when it comes to the ads featuring his product lines. Even as early as the 1980's when he featured Brooke Shields as a model for his jean ads, there were definite signs that he would have images that rivaled other designers, making a huge impact on advertising. Jeans reached an absolute frenzy in sales, in part, because his commercials were so popular. As the years have passed, more and more of the ads featured monthy in many fashion magazines are known for their artistic shock value.

Underwear and Jean Ads Off the Charts

By the time the late 1980's to 1990's rolled around, underwear ads were already being claimed by many to be too sexual. There were well chiseled men shown in provocative poses with torsos toward the camera. Nudes appeared. It was evident that CK ads were heating up and had steamy sexual appeal portrayed by models. More frequently, accessories were getting less and less, until jeans and greasy bodies entertwined together captivated your eye to engage the ad. There was no modest acting for the participants, if they wanted a Calvin spread in a magazine. It must have been great to have been allowed this kind of expressive freedom and be part of a radical advertisement campaign for a well known and highly successful designer.

CK in the 2000's

I continue to see some pretty overtly sexual ads in magazines and many of them have CK attached to them. There are same sex male or female ads, groups, couples, etc. all engaging in some randy appearing activity, I must say. The art director has my vote for the grimy, oily ones. Sex and shock sell and this person really knows the business. There is nothing wrong with getting a little dirty but that sentiment goes well beyond the initial impact of the image. The perfume and underwear ads are some of the most provocative I have ever seen before. There seems to be no slowing down, as more and more startling images succeed month after month in fashion magazines. One ad last year actually got banned. It seems that now people may be drawing the line on what is chosen to be featured in some periodicals around the world. Don't expect a complete standstill, however, because these ads make countless people money and money talks.

I have no problem with the ads. Sex does sell. If I don't like something well, I just dont look. Simple as that. Nice read. Thank you for sharing.:)

Any controversial ad makes a business flourish because of the popularity it gains.
