We did not get Riley as a puppy, although I knew of Riley when he was a tiny puppy as he was my niece’s dog. He was an adorable and affectionate puppy and that was pretty much all I knew about Riley.......a story about the life of Riley, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Wikipedia describes Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in its opening paragraph as a small breed of Spaniel-type dog, classed as a toy dog by most kennel clubs. It is one of the most popular breeds in the United Kingdom. Since 2000, it has been growing in popularity in the United States. It is a smaller breed of spaniel, and Cavalier adults are often the same size as adolescent dogs of other spaniel breeds. It has a silky coat and commonly an undocked tail. The breed standard recognizes four colours (Blenheim, Tricolour , Black and Tan, and Ruby). The breed is generally friendly, affectionate and good with both children and other animals.

Is It Time to Get A New Dog?

We did not get our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as a puppy, although I knew of Riley when he was a tiny puppy as he was my niece’s dog. He was an adorable and affectionate puppy and that was pretty much all I knew about Riley.

A year later I received a call from my niece asking if I could take Riley. It was just too much for her living in an apartment with two small children to keep the dog and she thought that I would be able provide a good home. I told her I had to think about it because getting a dog is a big responsibility and I wasn’t sure how my husband would react to having another dog.

From a German Shepherd to a Lap Dog?

Our last dog was a long haired German Shepherd that had passed away quite a few years before; prior to that we had a Shepherd mix, so a little dog was something completely new.

My mother-in-law also lives with us and she would have to agree to help take care of Riley. This was no easy task to convince them but I was ready to get another dog and I didn’t want to see Riley wind up at the pound so I prepared my argument that would convince them why we should take this dog.

Reasons Why

First off, I felt he would be good company for my MIL who spent her days home alone; Riley could keep her company while we were at work. Secondly, our children were grown and had all moved out of the house, so what better time than this for us to get a dog!

I knew one issue that my husband would bring up, which was a concern, was the fact that we had moved some years back and our current home did not have a fenced yard. Riley was so small, a fenced yard did not seem THAT important.

As I had guessed, my husband and my MIL did not want the dog at first but after much convincing on my part, they half heartedly agreed saying it would be my dog and my responsibility to walk and feed him, and with that they finally gave in.

Riley Becomes Part of the Family

Two years later my husband still tells everyone he does not like the dog. Riley is only 15 pounds and has a yappy bark and I guess my he will never regard him the same as he did our other dogs. I don't believe him for one minute though, I think he really loves Riley, he just won’t admit it!

While sitting and relaxing after work, I hear him invite Riley on his lap because Riley really is a lap dog. My husband and the dog both fall asleep on that couch, and I know that Riley adores him and I am sure it is mutual, so I just ignore my husband’s comments.

My mother-in-law, on the other hand, has grown to love the dog but Riley is boss over her which is not good. I keep telling her we all have to be on the same page here in order to properly train Riley. She is trying to adhere to consistency with the dog and is doing better.

Loving and Playful

Riley is the most loving and devoted dog ever, but, like a baby or small child, he does need lots of attention. After two years (Riley will be three), we are finally getting a picket fence to enclose the yard; a much needed convenience definitely worth saving for and getting.

If it is rainy out, Riley will sit on our covered porch and not venture one foot into the rain. He just sits and looks back at you with sad eyes as if to tell you it is raining out and how can he possibly go out in the rain. This breed definitely has attitude!

Needs Care Everyday

Riley is happy and content because he has a lot of care everyday. If anyone is considering getting this type of dog, it is good to consider that they do need a lot of attention. They are a very affectionate breed and have a sweet disposition but they also have a loud yappy bark and get excited easily. You do have to work with them on this and have lots of patience. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels do shed moderately and need to be brushed and bathed regularly. In return they will shower you with lots of love, affection, and devotion!
