How to Move Emotions that have Become Uncomfortably Stuck.
Feelings
Feelings are part of being human. They are our internal colours; red, blue, yellow, black.
A rainbow of emotions is ours. Like notes in a symphony, they give depth range and meaning to our experience. They add to the richness and variety of life.
Unless they get stuck. Then even a good emotion can become unhealthy, blocking the natural flow of feeling.
Culture
In today's society there is little room or tolerance for emotion. We feel embarrassed to cry in public. Children are told to be quiet when they are only expressing their natural joy. So we learn to control ourselves and to fear emotion as if it was the enemy.
We hold our breath or breath very shallowly to keep the energy of an emotion from surfacing, thereby trapping it in our body where it becomes unconscious but capable of causing symptoms and disease.
Thought Creates Emotions
Emotions are created by a thought or pattern of thinking. A story we tell ourselves, sometimes a habitual one we retell ourselves and others over and over. The story we tell comes out of our past and reveals our beliefs about ourselves, others and life. Habitual stories create habitual emotions. Fine if the story is a happy one, but not so good if negative because the story tends to lock the emotion in place causing mental and emotional suffering.Depression is caused by keeping a lid on an unwanted emotion for so long that the subject becomes numb and unable to feel a thing. How do we keep the lid on? By staying busy, by distracting ourselves with entertainment, drinking, substance abuse, etc.
Feelings are like the Weather
Normally feelings are like the weather. They come and go fairly rapidly from one minute, hour or day to the next and that is not a problem. But when we resist feeling them they get stuck and no one wants a rainy day every day or even a sunny one. Balance is the key in nature and we are no different. Most people are afraid of feeling deeply because it requires a giving up of control and they fear how they might look to others. But there is a very simple method of moving the energy of emotion in complete privacy and safety.
Clearing an Emotion
Sit in a quiet, private place and hold the intention of feeling the emotion, say sadness to the bottom. Locate the sensation in your body which corresponds to the emotion. Place your hand on that spot, say the throat, to help you focus. Breathe normally and just let any thoughts or feeling come up and be there. Embrace them, but don't hang onto any stories.
Just feel the emotion and let yourself cry if you need to. Stay with the feeling until it is gone. And don't hold your breath because that will keep the feeling from moving.
If you have been holding into your feelings for a long time they may be layered. Releasing one , you may find another underneath but it is the same process. Just keep going until you feel clear. After the repressed emotions are released, your energy will start to flow; you will know yourself better better; and feelings will come and go naturally. like clouds in the sky.
So let us embrace all our emotions, even the so called negative ones. They are all a part of our humanness and as long as we take responsibility for them and stop justifying them with stories we will do no harm to ourselves or others.

World goes round and before we know it colors of summer are replaced by winter's harsh colors. Like the diamonds need light to sparkle, ideas need words. Nice article Ms Moore.

Thanks for your inspirational article, I agree that many of us "fight" against feeling deeply and/or showing how deep emotions, we do not want to get hurt

Yes, feelings make us feel vulnerable, but they also help us make deep connections with others, when expressed responsibly. Risky, maybe, but potentially greatly rewarding.

Simply put but profound in the message conveyed, thanks C D Moore. I find the elderly folks are also bottling up their emotions especially their loneliness, much against their nature, while the young too get accustomed to not opening up mostly living within closed doors - quite unlike what it was in Asia a generation ago. Sharing and caring are a thing of the past - siva

A good post. One should not suppress one's emotions, not even anger/ They should be vented at an appropriate time. Here, time is the operative word.
