Common Injuries of the Bone

Bones are likely to be injured not only because of accidents but also because of the everyday stress to which they are subjected. When you lift heavy objects, workout or play and work for long hours, your bones are subjected to stress. What are these common injuries of bones?

Bones are held together at a joint by ligaments. When a joint is suddenly twisted, the ligaments may be stretched too much and be torn. A tear in the ligaments is called a sprain. When the tear is only partial, the sprain is mild. When the ligaments are completely torn, the sprain is severe. Sprains commonly occur in the ankles, shoulders, knees, wrists and fingers. They are the immediate result of a direct injury like a bad fall, sliding on a slippery surface or tripping on a rock. The symptoms of a sprain are a sudden, sharp pain and swelling of the affected area. Discoloration of the affected area appears in a day or two.

Disclocated Joint

When ligaments are torn, the bones they are holding may get out of place. When a bone is displaced from its normal position at a joint, the injury is called dislocation. Dislocation is usually caused by a heavy blow or an injury to the ligaments. It can occur at any point. The symptoms of dislocation are severe pain, rapid swelling, dislocation and inability to move the affected part.

Bone Fracture

A bad fall or a violent blow can result in a fracture. A fracture is a break in a bone. The break maybe across the width of the bone or along its length. It maybe oblique or spiral. In some fractures, only the outer side of the bone breaks. In others, the bone shatters into several pieces. Fractures maybe simple or compound. In a simple or closed fracture, the tissues surrounding the bone are not damaged so the skin is not broken. In a compound or open fracture, the tissues surrounding the broken bone are damaged. As a result, the broken bone protrudes through the damage tissues and the skin. Fractures commonly happen to bones in the hand, wrist and ankle, the collarbone and the bone in the thigh. Elderly people are the most common to have fractures because their bones are fragile and they fall more often. The common symptoms of a fracture are severe pain, swelling and tenderness at the affected area.

A dislocated joint is just awful, until it is snapped back in, that is.
Our bodies always amaze me.
