The key to getting a professional-looking paint job is preparing walls properly, painting surfaces in the correct order, and using the right tools.

How to Paint Your Walls and Ceilings Efficiently

Here are five easy steps to ensure a smooth and lasting paint finish for your walls and ceilings.

The key to getting a professional-looking paint job is preparing walls properly, painting surfaces in the correct order, and using the right tools. But before beginning the painting process, take time to collect the materials you will need, then follow the steps in the order listed.

MATERIALS
• 2-inch-wide brush for painting trim and molding and for edging the walls
• Roller with extension pole, tray and extra covers
• Dropcloths and rags
• Spackling compound, putty knife, and sandpaper
• Masking tape or painter’s tape for masking off ceiling, floor, and perimeters of windows and doors.
• Flathead screwdriver for opening paint cans
• Stirring sticks

Step 1. Prepare Walls
Wash holes with a mild detergent solution. Spackle holes and cracks; let dry, then sand smooth.

Step 2. Edge Walls
Using a brush, paint a 3-inch-wide strip where the ceiling meets the walls. Repeat in each corner of the room, and where the wall meets the floor or base molding and around windows and doors.

Step 3. Paint Ceiling
After edging the ceiling, use a roller with an extension handle to paint the remainder. For best results, and to prevent streaks and roller marks, you should paint the entire ceiling in one session.

Step 4. Paint Walls
Paint walls with roller. For even application, roll in a “W” formation then go back over the area with vertical strokes.

Step 5. Paint Windows
Mask the glass with masking or painter’s tape. Paint trim with a 2-inch brush. Leave window slightly open until paint is completely dry.
