Decorating your home doesn’t have to be costly. If you’re on a limited budget try these venues for unique and economical finds that will turn your house into a home.

Home Ownership

Home ownership is a dream that many people aspire to. Some shy away from apartment living because in most instances you are not allowed to change anything to more of your liking.

Purchasing a home is one of the more costly ventures that one can invest in. Monthly mortgage and utility bills are part of what being a homeowner is all about. But when it comes to decorating, try some of these places for good finds that might comfortably fit into your budget.

Thrift Stores

The fun thing about scouring the racks and shelves at thrift stores is that you never know what you might find. The perfect desk for your home office may be housed there. With a little TLC you might have just hit the jackpot and saved money in the process.

Accessories abound here. When we moved into our home a majority of my decor items were from thrift stores. I would go to several and browse around seeing how I could transform an item into something completely different from its intended use.

Estate and Garage Sales

Estate sales usually happen when there has been a death in the family or someone is relocating. You will likely find a lot of antiques and collectibles that are higher in price because of their quality.

Garage sales may have a few surprises for potential buyers. You might stumble upon just the right " knick-knack" for that empty shelf.

The advantage of shopping at these places is that you are often able to negotiate for a more economical price, especially if it's on the last day of the sale.

Rummage Sales

These are often held at local churches and sponsored by different organizations as a fund raising type event. Anything from dishes, pots and pans to crotchet doilies and lamps will often be sold here.

Flea Market and City Market

These are places that local merchants sell their wares. Your community newspaper will probably have the dates and times listed. In order to get the best deals you want to arrive early.

Dollar Tree and Dollar General Type Stores

I love these stores because you can usually find something that will work well within your budget. Things such as flower vases, candles, place mats and wall hangings are just a few.

Dumpster Diving

While this is not something that I have done, I know people who have done so with good results. Sometimes people throw things away not because it isn't any good but because they are looking for something different.

There is some truth in that someone's trash is often made into someone's treasure.

Front Lawns

Bulky items for pick-up often do not even reach the truck because people in trucks and/or cars will stop by the curb and rifle through it, often taking your discarded junk. What may be old to you may be just the thing that person was looking for.

Not a One Size Fits All Situation

People have different tastes so there is no right or wrong way to decorate your home. It should be a reflection of you and your family. Because it's your investment it should be one to be enjoyed.

Lee, great article and tips for decorating. I love the pictures. I've spent many years going to garage sales and flea markets. I'm always looking for craft supplies. I've found some really good deals.
