Types of Hosting Services

When it comes to making a hosting comparison you have several different options, so how do you choose? For each option, there are both advantages and disadvantages depending on your needs and preferences. Here we will take a look at popular web hosting options and what each one has to offer. The most common types of Web hosting are free web hosting, shared web hosting and dedicated web hosting.

Free Web Hosting
Free web hosting is a free service that is usually advertisement-heavy and generally only allows you to have a subdomain name like firstname.example.com or a directory like www.example.com/~firstname. With this option, you get free space, but it comes at a price – lots advertisements. The advertisements are automatically placed, so you won’t have any sway over the content of them which won’t work well for a business website, but might do just fine for a personal page. You are also very limited in the amount of freedom and bandwidth compared to a paid-for host. Check out our free web hosting page for more details.

Shared Web Hosting
Shared web hosting refers to a server where many other websites reside. Each site has its own space on the server without interacting with or overlapping other sites. This is generally the most economical web hosting service since many people share the overall maintenance of the server. The problem with this option is that it does not safely support secure websites if the sites all share the same IP address since they will then have the same digital certificate. Shared hosting will also be a hindrance to those wanting extensive software development outside of what the host supports.

VPS Hosting
If you find that your needs exceed that of a standard shared hosting account, but your not quite ready for a dedicated hosting expense, a mid-range alternative in price and functionality would be a Virtual Private Server (VPS) since it gives you the economies of shared hosting while mimicking the freedom of a dedicated server environment.

Dedicated Hosting
Dedicated web hosting differs from shared web hosting because you have the option of renting the entire server. This means you get access to all its resources, allowing you to host multiple websites on the server. This type of web hosting is also more sophisticated than shared hosting.

There are several other types of web hosting available that have not been listed here. It’s important to research all options before choosing the one that’s right for you. Keep in mind what you want from your host, how much control you need, software capabilities, etc. and you are sure to find the web host that is perfect for your site.
