My daughter who is leaving on a trip to Egypt was getting all kinds stuff ready for the trip this actually got me thinking about a kind of universal traveling checklist. Perhaps it would include some of these items...

For Your Peace Of Mind Take These Items Along.

Photocopies of all documents.

Have the photocopies with you and always store originals in a hotel safe or other secure place. Never keep originals plus photocopies in the same location.

Travel insurance policy and information.

Review your travel insurance before you go and ensure that you will be familiar with what your policy covers and what it does not.

Emergency numbers

Set up a record of emergency numbers for every stop off along the road. The list should consist of medical services, police, ambulance, coast guard, or anything which is appropriate to your personal situation and the specific location.

Prescriptions, guide books and stuff

Original Prescriptions For Eyeglasses and Medications.

Be sure that you photocopy prescriptions and Store the originals along with your passport. You should store all medications in original containers. Do not transfer to smaller bottles or zip lock bags.

Maps, guidebooks, Pamphlets as well as Internet printouts.

Remember to incorporate the information you will need to find your way around your destination. Decent street maps are particularly important. If required, you can buy a map at your destination;Organize this as soon as possible after arriving.

Pens, First Aid Kits, Baby wipes and Power Kits

Take a pen with you at all times. It will be useful for signing credit card slips and filling out forms such as customs declarations.

First-aid kit

Pharmacies and department stores usually supply small first-aid kits. These kits will help you to manage small cuts, bug stings or bites, diarrhea, indigestion, etc. Add to it if required. For example, if you have allergies, add anti-allergy medication or an auto-injector, depending on the severity of your allergies.

Baby wipes or Hand sanitizers

Viruses and bacterial infections can strike any unprepared vacationer. Carry a bottle of hand sanitizer - 100 ml/100 grams or less - and keep to existing transportation guidelines for packing liquids. Alternatively, pack anti-bacterial baby wipes or individually wrapped single-use sanitizer gel-packs. Use wipes to clean your hands and eating surfaces.

Power conversion kit

In many countries, you will need a special adapter before you plug in your razor or hair dryer. If you will be traveling to several countries, a multi-unit kit is best.

And All The Rest.

Plan to take along favorite books, magazines, or what ever you will require to keep yourself occupied for the duration of the trip. If you have children, be certain to include their preferred games and toys.Perhaps to take along your MP3 player and headphones (airline headphones are usually of inferior quality)

Digital camera with extra memory card(s) and batteries

If you have an expensive digital camera at home, it might be sensible to pick up a cheaper model especially for the trip.

Travel alarm

Hotel alarm clocks do not always work and may well be secured to a place that is not handy for you. If you tend to wake up at some stage in the middle of the night and see the time or if you don't want to rely on wake up calls, a personal travel alarm solves this predicament.

Season- and location-specific clothing

Plan for all applicable weather circumstances, including rain, snow, heat waves, wind, and anything else you might encounter. Even in the tropics, a sweater comes in useful.

Memory Cards and Batteries

Remember to take along spare memory cards and batteries for your electronic equipment example, MP3 player,Digital camera. Also have spare batteries for the above including the travel alarm.

and Internet to read wikinut articles about traveling.

Good tips! :) Though nowadays many places have big western-like malls. In Cochin there are two, where much of these items are readily available and at cheaper prices... :-)

It's worth travelling with a travel plug too just in case your hair dryer or phone charger won't fit in the plugs in the hotel

Your'e so right Rose, best to include those items as well. Another money saving idea, is to buy regular sized medicine quantities, since "Travel Size" often come at, at least double the price!
