Father's Day is one of the most important celebrations in my family. This article tells a story about my dad and why we celebrate Father's Day each day.

About My Dad

I have written a few articles about my dad in the past highlighting the struggles and pains he went through when he was a child, his dreams, his perseverance, and his hard work in order to provide his family a decent life. In this article, I will talk about a tragedy that happened to him in the late '60's that almost took his life, how he survived, and the reason why we celebrate Father's Day each day. May this touch your heart.

The Tragic Event

I do not have any recollection, whatsoever, when this tragedy occurred. I just heard the story from my parents, that it happened sometime in 1967. They had 4 children at that time, ages 6, 4, 2, and almost 1. I was 2 years old then.

My dad was a laborer, who worked at a public market carrying grocery bags for people who needed help in transporting them to their cars or taxis. One day, he went to work very early in the morning to do his routine. He would normally come home at noon and spend the rest of the day with us. That night, he did not come home, which was very unusual. A neighbor knocked at the door, and delivered the bad news to my mom. My dad was stabbed and was taken to the hospital. He was in a serious condition, having had a number of stab wounds made by a 3-sided knife.

He was stabbed by a notorious gang member after several occasions of refusing to give money being collected by the gang to support their vices. I believe at one point, they had a heated argument, but was pacified later on. The guy apologized for what he did, then asked for my dad's friendship. They became friends, but unknown to my dad, the guy bore grudge on him until that fateful day, they crossed their paths again. They said "Good Morning" to each other. The guy shook his hand, stabbed him repeatedly, then fled. My dad chased him in the busy streets of Pasay City, but because he was badly wounded and bleeding, he could no longer run. His best friend followed him and took him to the hospital. The sad part was, before he could be taken to the hospital, his friend had difficulty getting a cab. The cab drivers would just drive away as soon as they saw my dad bathing in his own blood. They probably did not want their cabs to get dirty. His friend had to harass the next cab driver to give them a ride, and it worked.

He Survived

My dad never woke up for 3 days. My mom was told that it would be a miracle if he would wake up on the fourth day. Miracle happened as he woke up on the fourth day.

It was hard to imagine how life could be for him, a laborer whose income was based on his day-to-day work, and a breadwinner in the family with 4 young children. He could not go back to work right away because he had to recuperate for several months, considering the manual nature of his occupation. While my dad stayed home trying to get well, his friends took turns helping us in terms of financial assistance, food, helping my mom take care of us, and doing some household chores. It was heartwarming to know that during difficult times like this, there would still be people who would care. God took care of us through the help of friends.

Celebrating the Precious Gift of Life

Life is so precious and fragile. We thank God for sparing my dad's life. It would be very hard growing up without a father. Had he died, my sisters and I would not have happy memories of him while we were growing up, nor would we know how wonderful he is as a person. He is an amazing father to all his children, a loving husband to my mom, and very caring to all his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is a person who well deserves love and respect. Because of this, we are very grateful for each day that we spend with him. Each day with him is a celebration of a precious life. Each day is Father's Day.

I hope you enjoyed reading my dad's story, and I wish you all Happy Father's Day.

Many of the sacrifices of parents to bring up their children go unnoticed. Thanks for showing your appreciation time and again, Tess. Your parents deserve such warm words and, in fact, I take this applies to other deserving perents too. Yes, your life would have been totally different if he had not recovered with indomitable will. I always believe God will provide in His own way through others who will rise to the occasion - siva
