A guide to growing beautiful spring flowers in warmer climates that lack the necessary harsh per-requisite winter conditions.

Growing Spring Flowers

As the snow melts and the bare ground begins to flourish with life, spring flowers begin to spread their wondrous beauty. Many spring flowers, such as tulips only grow in cooler climates that see a cooler winter period where the soil temperature drops below 55 degrees for about 12 weeks. This cold period puts the bulbs into a winter sleep period, which is essential for producing beautiful flowers.

Luckily, this spring beauty can be enjoyed without suffering through a chilling winter. Many spring flowers can be fooled into thinking they are going through their cold soil period. This illusion can be attained by cooling your bulbs in a refrigerator or climate controlled region. These bulbs should be kept cooled for a period of time similar to what they would experience in nature. Gardeners can cool their own bulbs or purchase pre-cooled bulbs. After the bulbs have been chilled for approximately 12 months or less, depending on whether or not they were pre-cooled bulb, they are ready to be planted. Bulbs should be planted in cool soil in order to establish healthy roots. Healthy roots can take approximately 5 weeks to grow. Once your bulbs have established roots they are ready for their warm period, which means they can be planted outside in their new warm climate.

After you have planted your bulbs, water, sit back and enjoy your beautiful spring flowers without the toe numbing winter.
