Putting up a nursery for ornamental plants is an important part of ornamental gardening. It is the nursery that young plants are propagated. It is in the nursery where different kinds of ornamental plants are planted and grown until such time that they are ready to be transferred into the garden. With a nursery, plants and any kind easily be raised and propagated.

Factors in Putting up a Nursery

There are several factors to consider in putting up a nursery. Choose a place where there is continuous supply of water. Young plants need to be watered regularly from them to grow. It is very important to keep the soil moist all the time. The soil that most plant needs in order to grow healthy is the loam type. This type of soil is rich in organic matter and can easily be drained. Every nursery must have a shed for seedlings and young plants to grow. Without a shed, the seedlings and young plants may be exposed to strong sunlight. Too much sunlight can burn the plants. The shed should receive half light. It must also protect the plants from rain and strong winds. It must be large enough to accommodate boxes with germinating seeds, as well as young plants placed in pots or plastic bags. Since tools and equipment are important in all nursery works, they are always used everyday. For proper up keeping and maintenance, allot a space for all tools and equipment so that they are properly kept. This can be a small room or cabinet where they can be hanged, placed in toolboxes or arranged in drawers or other containers. Keep the tools and equipment in their place before and after using. Be sure to clean and wipe dry each tool after use.

Nursery Layout

Make a simple layout for the proper location of germinating boxes, pots, and plots in the propagation shed. The arrangement can be such that all germinating boxes are in one area, all pots in another area, and all pots in another area. These areas can father be subdivided based on the kinds of plants being propagated. This means that you can arrange together plants of the same kind or type whether these are in the germinating boxes, pots or plots. Besides type, group together those of the same size. This way, you can easily locate them. Also, there is a need to create paths in-between the boxes, pots, and plants for easy care of the plants. This includes watering, weeding, cutting off dried leaves, applying fertilizers and others.

Choosing the Seeds to plant

Some plants grow on seeds. It is important to collect healthy and robust seeds, those that are not diseased, with no blemishes or decay. They should be clean, mature, and uniform in size. Seeds should be dried properly and stored in baskets or containers where they cannot be eaten by insects, rodents, and animals. The most suitable time to plant is in the beginning of the rainy season. The seeds must be sown in the germinating boxes or pots before the summer so that when they grow into young healthy seedlings, they are ready for transplanting at the start of the rainy season.

Choosing the Soil

The soil used for planting seeds should be 40% clay loam, 30% compost, 20% dried manure or chicken dung, and 20% sand. Mix these thoroughly. The mixture should be fine and well-pulverized. Fill up the germinating boxes, pots or plastic bags to about ¾ full. Sow the seeds. Cover with moist soil 2-4 cm thick. Smaller seeds must be covered with thin soil. After planting the seeds or cutting they are placed under the shed to protect them from too much heat from the sun.
