Five Important Considerations When Renovating a Kitchen

Any kitchen renovation should first begin with a well-designed plan. By ensuring each detail is addressed prior to the start of your renovation, you can substantially steer clear of many of the common pitfalls that can occur during a standard kitchen renovation. While some issues are obvious, such as whether or not to purchase new appliances or use the old ones, or choices as to placement of islands and cabinetry, other considerations may not be as readily considered.

Below are a few issues you may want to consider when planning your own kitchen renovation:

Eco-Friendly Gas or Easy To Use Electric:
Most newly built homes today provide both types of supply lines. Lines from a major gas company to your home for use in whole-house heating, water heating and cooking are commonplace and, in some areas, preferred due to what some consider a more eco-friendly nature. In this article from the Minnesota Department of Commerce Energy Information Center, newer models of gas ranges burn less gas than older models as they are made with an electric ignition as opposed to prior models which used a gas burning pilot light.
While gas has its advantages, many feel their maintenance can make them less convenient to use than an electric range. New models of electric ranges come with smooth ceramic stove tops which can be easily cleaned and maintained quickly and thoroughly. With no attachments to remove prior to cleaning, some say these electric ranges are far more user-friendly than their gas counterparts.

Appliance Accessibility:

Whether choosing stainless, white, black or bisque, your appliances are only as good as their ease of use and accessibility. When planning your kitchen layout, you must account for spaces between appliance doors and any nearby cabinetry or general obstruction such as an island or table space. Measure the areas where they will be placed and be sure to include the measurements of doors as they are opened. This will ensure there is enough room to easily access items from within each appliance as needed.

As one of the most misjudged aspects of any kitchen remodeling project, storage still holds top billing on the list of most important kitchen must-haves. While ornate cabinetry and chunky islands are lovely to have, if it cannot be easily incorporated into a convenient design, consider something a bit more streamlined. Alternatives to such items can include built-ins like under-cabinet shelving or appliance garages. These sleek additions are widely available at nationwide kitchen design centers such as Prosource Flooring as well as local centers in your area.

With so many wonderful kitchen styles to choose from, picking just the right one for your personal taste can be tough. But, no matter the choice, unless you plan to remain in your home for a good while, the resale real estate value should be considered. If you’re renovating specifically for the sale of your home, or if you do plan on one day selling the home, keep cabinetry and wall color, flooring choices and backsplash style as neutral as possible. This will be far more appealing to a wider range of buyers while also providing a wonderful change for your own taste. Decorate with accessories such as books, flowers and lovely dishware to enliven the space and add your own sense of style.

Family Friendly

While chic floors and dramatic cabinetry are wonderful additions to any kitchen, they may not fit your personal lifestyle. If you have children, some flooring may be better than others in terms of comfort and usability and some cabinetry may be better suited to a more active lifestyle where consistent cleaning would be the norm. Maintenance, ease of use and comfort should always be considered when planning any renovation.

Many home design centers provide their customers the opportunity to browse various kitchen styles and products in showrooms which can prove to be a valuable source for ideas when planning your own kitchen renovation.
