Ford Ecosport v/s Nissan Terrano

Compact SUVs have become a rage in the Indian automotive market which is why all the major automobile companies are making a beeline to launch their own compact SUV. Ford Ecosport is a very popular compact SUV in the market and Renault Duster has been giving it stiff competition for a long time and now another competitor has been launched in the market. This is the new compact SUV from Nissan which is known as Nissan Terrano.

Experts believe that all these compact SUVs have created a storm in the Indian market and pose serious threat to the market share of other small cars and sedans.
Ford realized that Indian consumers want an SUV which has the same looks and road presence as the traditional SUVs but at the same time are compact and fuel efficient, which prompted them to come up with Ecosport. This has a muscular design but at the same time is compact making it easy for the driver to maneuver it through heavy traffic and to park it in cramped parking lots. It is also very fuel efficient with the Ecoboost petrol engine delivering a mileage of 18.9kmpl and the diesel engine delivering a mileage of 22.7kmpl which is very impressive.

Nissan ventures into the compact SUV market with Nissan Terrano. The design of the vehicle is highly inspired by Renault Duster but is larger in size which gives it a lot of road presence. Also the company has made many modifications on the exteriors which make it look much better and stylish than Duster. The petrol engine delivers a mileage of 13.4kmpl whereas the 85PS diesel engine delivers a mileage of 20.64kmpl and the 110PS diesel engine delivers a mileage of 19.1kmpl.
Let us now compare the features of Ecosport and Terrano:

Ecosport has a 1.0liter petrol engine which is known as Ecoboost engine and is an engine with three cylinders. This engine is very fuel efficient and is all set to popularize small engines. The 1.0liter Ecoboost engine in Ecosport offers a mileage of 18.9kmpl and is extremely fuel efficient in comparison to the hatchbacks and the 1.6liter petrol engine which is offered in the other petrol variant of Ford EcoSport. With automatic transmission, the 1.5liter petrol engine can deliver a mileage of 15.6kmpl and with manual transmission it is capable of delivering a mileage of 15.8kmpl. The interiors of Ecosport are quite similar to the sedan class car Ford Fiesta and thus are top class. The console looks very trendy with buttons that have been arranged in an ordered manner. But compared to Fiesta, the quality and the design in the interiors are superior. The SUV boasts of many modern gadgets and equipments which include Bluetooth, MP3 player, USB slots, audio controls on the steering wheel, Driver Information System, rear parking sensors and keyless entry.

The seats are very comfortable and have enough head room and leg room for the passengers. The rear seat is very comfortable and ensures enough shoulder room.
Ecosport has a boot space of 346 liters which means it can carry a lot of luggage.
The interiors of Terrano have a very elegant look and are extremely functional and practical. A lot of modern features and equipments have been provided in this vehicle which includes keyless entry, Bluetooth, USB slots, 4-speaker audio system, Driver Information System, electrically controlled rear view mirrors and ABS.

The speedometer console has the speedometer, tachometer, fuel consumption level all integrated into one and is easy to read at all times of the day.

The seats in Terrano can comfortably seat five adults. There is enough head room, leg room and shoulder room for all the passengers though the knee room is a bit less.
Terrano has an impressive boot space of 475 liters.

Ecosport has a very muscular design but being a sub four meter SUV it is compact. It has an amazing road presence. Like all the Ford vehicles, it has large trapezoidal grille in front and the head lights are very slim which make it look very sleek and stylish.
The side profile is quite similar to the profiles of compact SUVs.

The tail lights are oblique and the rear window is a large wraparound window. An attractive feature is that the handle of the swing door has been placed within the tail light and the spare tire has been displayed on the swing door to give it a trendy look. This has a ground clearance of 200mm.

The wheel arches of Nissan Terrano are large which give it a look of a huge vehicle and adds to its road presence. The front bumper is the same color as the body of the SUV and the fog lights have been integrated to it. The angularly styled black bezel headlights are sleek and the stylish chrome grille in the front is very appealing.

The side profile of Terrano looks very stylish with lots of curves and lines. The door handles and the fuel lid are the same color as that of the body.

The rear profile is also very stylish with split taillights and stylish boot door. It has a ground clearance of 205mm.

Handling and Braking

Ecosport is easy to handle and turning at high speeds does not pose any problems. It also has a good suspension which has been made keeping in mind the Indian terrain. With ABS and EBD, the SUV has a very good braking mechanism.

The handling of Terrano is also very good and the driver does not feel like he is driving an SUV as it is very easy to drive. The braking mechanism is quite powerful with disc brakes for the front wheels and drum brakes for the back.

Ecosport has been priced between Rs. 6.46 lakhs and Rs. 9.71 lakhs. On the other hand, Terrano has been priced between Rs. 9.63 lakhs and Rs. 12.50 lakhs. Since Ecosport is a sub-4 meter vehicle it has certain tax exemptions that are enjoyed by small cars and thus, it is priced lower.

The interior, exteriors and handling and braking of both and Nissan Terrano are exceptionally good. But, Ford Ecosport is a sure shot winner when it comes to fuel efficiency, performance, mileage and price.
