general Mac Arthur could not lead US forces to a clear cut victory in Korea. As an option he recommended atomic bombing of China. Truman almost agreed, but removed him as he wanted a more compliant general

Introduction

General MacArthur was the Supreme Commander of all US forces in the Pacific. He is credited with leading the US to victory over Japan. At the end of the Second World War in 1945, he had become a larger than life figure and even overshadowed the US president Harry Truman. The US Congress also hailed him as a great soldier.

The accolades for General MacArthur are justified as he was the single catalyst that steeled the US resolve against Japan. He did rally the US against Japan, but after that he should have stayed at home for in subsequent wars he could not come to terms with new tactics and strategy.

MacArthur as Commander in Korea

\At the end of the war he was appointed Chief administrator of Japan and after the Tokyo war crimes trials returned to the USA. In 1950 the North Koreans invaded South Korea and the Korean War commenced. General MacArthur now a five star general was again appointed as the supreme commander of the US forces in Korea. In hindsight this was a mistake committed by Harry Truman, but as MacArthur commanded a larger than life image perhaps Truman was swayed to appoint MacArthur.

Failure of MacArthur in Korea

Mac Arthur schooled in the way to fight the Japanese could not gauge the human wave tactics of the Koreans and later the Chinese. MacArthur was surprised with this new tactics and it went against his concept of battle. He failed to make head way and then he made a request for a nuclear bombing of China and North Korea

MacArthur and Atomic Bombing

MacArthur wanted 60 Atomic bombs of ‘Limited Yield’. With these he wished to Bomb the border with China and Korea. His contention was that as the half life period of an isotope is 60 years, for this much time China and Korea would never cross the line of control.
Mac Arthur probably thought that like an Atomic bombing of Japan another over China was of no consequence. But the situation had changed and the Russians also had the Atomic Bomb. Sadly President Truman did consider this option.
This was MacArthur way to cover up the beating he had received from the Chinese and Korean Army.

Removal of MacArthur

President Truman took a momentous decision to dismiss MacArthur. This was a surprise to the General himself. But it must be understood that MacArthur somehow did not measure up to the human wave tactics of the communists and was at his wits end. His recommendation for an Atomic bombing of China was to say the least thoughtless. But the man appointed to replace him General Ridgeway, also felt an Atomic strike against China was a necessity.

Truman almost agreed. In fact at one stage 38 A Bombs were got ready and strategic bomber command alerted. MacArthur was removed only because Truman wanted a more compliant general. However at the last moment Truman backed off from the Atomic bombing as world opinion including the then British premier Winston Churchill advised against it.

Thank goodness the United States had a change of heart in using atomic weapons. The science members of the atomic bomb people at Los Alamos started to have a change of heart after the first two atomic bombs. Anti atomic bomb movement was sort of also instrumental in stopping the prolific use of atomic bombs.

Fascinating snippets from history, Madan. Obviously, MacArthur became trigger happy. I think of Pakistan, democracy or not, there is always an elephant in the room, their army! Atomic bombings kill and maim the most innocents - siva
